Exciting New Pig Enterprise Launches at the College

This week marks a significant milestone for our College as we welcome a new pig enterprise to our agricultural program. We’ve introduced 80 lively piglets, just three weeks old, into our care. This initiative is part of a new partnership with WestPork, which will purchase the pigs from us at 20 weeks of age for processing at DBC in Bunbury.

In addition, we’ve also received five 15-week-old pigs. Our students will manage these pigs closely and they will gain hands-on experience through their care and training. Three of these pigs will also be selected to compete in the Royal Show in Perth later this term. After the show, these pigs will be processed at Linley Valley Pork as part of a carcase competition, providing our students with valuable insights into meat production and quality assessment.

This new enterprise has also introduced our students to rigorous biosecurity protocols, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for animals, staff, students and visitors. The initial weeks have been a whirlwind of activity, with students and staff undergoing detailed inductions into these essential procedures.

Looking ahead, the College plans to expand this pig enterprise, increasing the number of pigs and launching a breeding program. This expansion will further enhance our students' learning experiences and provide additional opportunities for hands-on involvement in livestock management and genetics.

With these developments, our students now have additional opportunities to complete livestock-related units of competence, advancing their agricultural vocational qualifications. We’re excited about the educational prospects this brings and look forward to seeing our students gain new knowledge and skills.

Congratulations to all students and staff involved in preparing for the pigs' arrival.

Weekend Stock Roster

Year 10 and 11 students are encouraged to take special note of the Weekend Stock Roster as their attendance is required for their Farm learning program.

If a student cannot attend their weekend stock duty, it is their responsibility to arrange a swap with another student at least 1 week before their rostered weekend. Students who fail to complete their weekend stock duty will be rostered for additional weekend duties.

Repeated non-attendance will result in a loss of Good Standing until weekend stock duties have been fulfilled.

Please don’t hesitate to contact myself or Tony Abel (Farm Manager) if you require further information regarding the Farm Training program.
