Blackwood Camp

Last week, thirteen students from Emerson Middle School embarked on an unforgettable Outdoor Education Camp at the Blackwood Specialist Outdoor Education Centre, running from Wednesday 18th March to Friday 20th March. Nestled among the natural beauty of the Blackwood region, the camp provided the perfect setting for adventure, challenge, and personal growth.

Accompanied by staff members Mrs Lana Formoso and Stewart MacKinnon, students immersed themselves in a diverse program of exciting activities designed to build confidence, teamwork, and resilience. From navigating the bush during orienteering to working together in team challenges, every activity encouraged students to communicate, problem-solve, and support one another.

Students embraced the outdoors through bushwalking and bike riding, while also testing their courage on the climbing tower and flying fox. A highlight for many was trying their luck at gold panning, adding a sense of discovery and fun to the experience. As the sun set, the adventure continued with a night walk through the bush, followed by the unique experience of night archery under the stars. The evening was brought to a perfect close around the campfire, where students relaxed, shared stories, and enjoyed toasted marshmallows together.

Throughout the three days, students consistently demonstrated outstanding cooperation, enthusiasm, and determination. Many stepped outside their comfort zones, trying new activities and overcoming personal challenges. It was wonderful to see students encouraging one another, celebrating successes, and building stronger friendships along the way.

The camp offered invaluable opportunities for personal development, helping students grow in confidence, independence, and communication skills within a supportive and encouraging environment. Staff were extremely proud of the students’ positive attitudes, respectful behaviour, and willingness to fully engage in every aspect of the program.

To finish the experience on a high note, students enjoyed a well-earned visit to McDonald’s on the journey home, a treat that was met with plenty of smiles after an action-packed three days.

Overall, the Outdoor Education Camp was a highly successful and memorable experience for all involved. We warmly congratulate the students on their fantastic participation and the way they represented Emerson Middle School with pride.
