Assessment and Reporting

As we approach the end of Semester 1, our teachers are finalising student reports. Reporting provides an opportunity to celebrate student achievement, recognise growth and identify future learning goals.
At St Joseph's, assessment is an ongoing process. Throughout the semester, teachers gather evidence of learning through observations, classwork, discussions, assessment tasks, student self-reflections and formal and informal assessments. This information is used to determine each student's current level of achievement and to plan future learning.
Achievement is reported using the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Common Grade Scale. These grades reflect a student's achievement against syllabus outcomes and standards taught and assessed up to this point in time.
A - The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.
B - The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.
C - The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills.
D - The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills.
E - The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills.
It is important to remember that grades provide a snapshot of achievement at a particular point in time. Equally important is the growth students make throughout their learning journey. Every child progresses at their own pace and significant learning growth should be celebrated regardless of the grade achieved.
We encourage families to celebrate successes and discuss future learning goals with their children. If you have any questions regarding your child's report, our teachers welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss their progress.
