Principal’s Update – Week 1
As we begin Term 2, I would like to warmly welcome all students, staff, and families back to Balmoral State High School. I hope the holiday period provided an opportunity for rest, connection, and renewal.
It has already been an exciting start to the term, with Balmoral continuing to be recognised as a leading school in educational innovation and student engagement. Our school was proudly featured in the recent launch of The Engagement Partnership, the latest book by educational researcher Amy Berry. During the launch, I had the privilege of joining a panel discussion alongside respected educators, including our own Zena Carusi-Lees, Head of Department Pedagogy and Performance to explore how schools can foster deeper learner engagement through genuine partnership with students.
Balmoral was highlighted for the work we are undertaking to place student voice, agency, and engagement at the centre of learning. This recognition reflects the outstanding work of our staff and, most importantly, our students, who continue to shape the future of learning at our school. Even more impressive is that some of our school examples feature in parts of Amy Berry’s new book.
We were equally proud to see Lauren Tull, our Head of Department – Science, recently contribute to an important professional learning event focused on sustainable learning environments event in the city this week. Lauren spoke passionately about the vital role of student voice in driving sustainable practice and ensuring that educational decision-making reflects the lived experiences of young people. Her contribution further reinforces Balmoral's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence.
During the holiday break, significant progress was also made on the transformation of our library. The space has been completely reimagined, creating a contemporary learning environment designed to better support collaboration, creativity, and independent study. We are excited to share images of the refreshed space with our community next week.
Finally, our recent ANZAC Day service was a deeply moving and memorable occasion. We were honoured to welcome distinguished guests from our local community as we came together to reflect, remember, and pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women. The respect shown by our students throughout the ceremony was exemplary.
Term 2 promises to be another outstanding term of learning, growth, and opportunity. I look forward to all that we will achieve together.
Regards,
Timothy Barraud
Principal
