Year 12 Geography – Chowder Bay Sydney Harbour

In Week 8 of Term 1, our Year 12 Geography students took part in an exciting fieldwork excursion focused on Ecosystems and Global Biodiversity at Chowder Bay in Sydney Harbour, part of the Great Southern Reef. This immersive experience allowed students to investigate the structure, function and resilience of a kelp forest ecosystem in a real-world setting.

Students explored key geographic concepts through hands-on activities, including snorkelling within the kelp forest to observe its rich biodiversity firsthand. At Clifton Gardens Reserve, they applied fieldwork techniques to examine spatial patterns, ecosystem dynamics, and the impacts of human activity. The excursion also encouraged students to consider sustainable management strategies and responses to environmental change.

This engaging fieldwork opportunity provided valuable insights into how ecosystems function and the role humans play in shaping and protecting them, bringing classroom learning to life.
