Lights, camera… learning!

Our recent excursion to ACMI at Federation Square was packed with creativity, curiosity and plenty of “WOW!” moments.

Students took part in the Me and My World talk, where they explored how TV shows can tell powerful stories and help audiences understand emotions and feelings. From dramatic music to funny facial expressions, students discovered how filmmakers use different techniques to make us laugh, cry, feel suspense… or sit on the edge of our seats waiting for what happens next!

In the Story of the Moving Image exhibition, students traveled through the world of film, television, animation, and even video games. They explored old-school technology, compared past and present ways of creating media, and investigated how lighting, sound, textures and special effects bring stories to life.

This learning connects directly to our Inquiry unit, where students will soon become filmmakers themselves by using iPads to capture photos to create their own social stories. The excursion helped students understand that every camera angle, sound effect, and image choice can help communicate feelings, ideas, and important messages.

Who knows? We may have a few future directors, or game designers in JLA!
