Building Literacy Skills with Heart Words
During our literacy sessions, our Prep students have been enthusiastically learning and practising Heart Words. Heart Words are high-frequency words that children need to know ‘by heart’ because some parts of the words cannot easily be sounded out using regular phonics rules.
Through engaging games, hands-on activities and repeated reading practice, students are developing confidence in recognising and reading these important words automatically. Learning Heart Words helps children become more fluent readers.
Students have enjoyed using magnetic letters, rainbow writing and interactive word activities to strengthen their memory of each word. We are so proud of the enthusiasm and persistence our Prep learners are showing as they build their literacy skills each day.
You can support your child at home by practising Heart Words together during reading time, spotting them in books, or creating fun word games to reinforce learning.
We look forward to continuing our literacy journey and celebrating the wonderful progress our students are making!
Additionally, as part of our ‘Rights and Responsibilities’ topic, we are learning about the responsibilities of people who help us in our community. This will involve some incursions, starting this Friday 15th of May with St John’s Ambulance where the children will develop basic skills in First Aid.
Coming up, we will have our community Police Officer, Loretta visiting on the 20th of May and Fire Rescue Victoria on June 5th and June 12th. Dates of incursions with our crossing supervisor and medical professionals to be confirmed.
