Grade 6 Report

In the second half of Term One, our Grade 6 students have been exploring migration to Australia from 1900 to the present day, as well as examining significant events since Federation. We created detailed world maps to visually represent migration patterns to Australia. Using data and research, they illustrated how migration has changed over time and identified which regions of the world have contributed most to Australia’s population. This activity supported students in developing their geographical understanding alongside their historical knowledge.
Students have also investigated the diverse journeys of people migrating to Australia from different continents, including Europe, Asia, and Africa. They have explored the reasons why people chose to migrate, such as seeking new opportunities, escaping conflict, or reuniting with family. Through this learning, students have developed a greater appreciation for the rich multicultural society we have in Australia today. They have also reflected on how migration has shaped the identity of “Our Australia” over time.
A highlight of our learning has been the creation of a whole-class timeline showcasing significant events in Australia since Federation in 1901. Each student researched an important event and contributed their work to our classroom display. This activity has helped students to see how events connect and influence one another over time. It has been great to see students making connections between historical events and present-day Australia.
