Grade 3 Report

In Maths groups, Grade 3 children have been exploring the concept of duration and have been learning to estimate, measure and compare how long different activities take. Through hands-on experiences, they investigated everyday tasks, such as how long it takes to tie their shoes.

To celebrate their learning, students took part in a fun and creative Classroom Olympics! Working in 11 small groups, they designed their own events with an important challenge: each activity had to be completed in under 2 minutes and the entire Classroom Olympic Games had to be under 20 minutes. This required careful planning, estimating, testing, justifying and refining to ensure their event met the time criteria.

Some of the imaginative events included throwing and catching a ball 50 times, reading the first two pages of a book, creating repeating patterns (AA, BB, CC, DD) and building a 20-piece domino track. Students showed fantastic teamwork and problem-solving skills as they fine-tuned their activities.

During our Olympics session, each group had the opportunity to participate in every event. They then compared their estimated times with the actual durations, deepening their understanding of how time works in real-life contexts!
