What is the circle of control?
The circle of control highlights areas in our lives where we can take meaningful actions and make a positive difference.
The ancient Stoic philosophers (Seneca, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius) held that we can live more peaceful and purposeful lives if we focus our attention and energy on what we CAN control.
So what can we control; our thoughts, emotions as well as our reactions and actions. These are things that we have a choice over and can work to improve.
By contrast, what is outside our control include; other people’s actions, feelings and opinions, the weather, and random events in life, like a traffic incident on the way to work/school. We should not waste our energy worrying about these events that we cannot control.
But kids worry, they worry a lot about things they cannot control. They worry about what others think of them, if there is thunderstorm, if a loved one or pet is unwell. Sometimes they even feel responsible. If we learn to focus on what we can control and put things into perspective, it is likely to increase resilience, productivity and success.
The circle of control is a visual representation that is easy for students to use, the inner circle being a reflection of their inner selves. The outer circle represents the external factors or events that are outside of our control. By explaining this concept to students, they will hopefully gain tools to manage their thoughts more effectively. They may even be able to let go of unnecessary worries which can lead to increased resilience and improved overall wellbeing.
