School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Brunswick North Primary School is proud to be a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) School. SWPBS is an evidence-based framework that helps us create a safe, supportive and engaging learning environment for all students, while enabling schools to improve student academic, wellbeing and behavioural outcomes. We know that when we model, teach and acknowledge the behaviours that align to our school values, our students come to understand the positive consequences of these behaviours.

Together, our students and staff have identified key behaviours that support wellbeing and learning. These are captured in our school matrix, which supports us to live our school values every day.

Students are explicitly taught how to use these behaviours in context and are acknowledged at an individual, class and whole-school level when they succeed.

Whole-School Acknowledgement

Our school-wide acknowledgment system allows us to strengthen a specific positive behaviour through explicit teaching, practice and reinforcement. We have recently launched our first whole-school acknowledgement for the year, focusing on: ‘I follow classroom routines’. This aligns with our core value of Responsibility and helps to bring increased structure and engagement to classrooms, supporting students to feel safe, confident and ready to learn.

Students who demonstrate behaviours aligned with this focus are awarded a special token which they proudly add to the acknowledgment board at the office, contributing to our collective goal. Once our target of 500 is reached, we celebrate our efforts with a whole-school reward carefully selected by our SWPBS student leaders.

Alongside this process, staff have been engaging in professional learning sessions focused on deepening their understanding of Positive Classroom Management Strategies, while using evidence-based strategies to effectively establish and embed routines across the school.
