Term 1, Week 8
Kinder Visit
Last week, some of our Spring Gully Kinder students had a visit from some very special guests! Corrina and Sonia read us a story and we shared about how school is different to kinder and what our favourite things about school are.
In Literacy, we have been busy learning our stage 2 sounds and practising the letter formation of each sound. In Maths, we finished learning our numbers to 10, and started learning about 2D shapes.
Cross Country
Prep children will participate in the Cross Country on Monday 31st March. Please provide consent via Compass and see the event details page for more information. A note will be sent home next week notifying families of their child's house colour. Your child is welcome to wear their house colour on the day of Cross Country.
Easter Hat Parade
Prep children are invited to wear an Easter Hat to school on Friday 4th April for our Easter Hat Parade. We encourage families to be creative and resourceful during the construction process, and hope that you enjoy completing this activity together at home.
Now that we are well and truly into the term, we wanted to touch base about Home Reading.
By the end of this week, we will have learnt the first 16 sounds in our Literacy Program. Your child should be able to tell you the sound that each letter makes and be working on blending each of these sounds together to read a word.
We practise these skills every day at school and we strongly encourage that your children are practising these skills at home too. Where possible, please spend 5-15 minutes (in total) each day doing the below things to help your child learn to read.
1.Show your child the sound tiles (yellow and red cards) and get them to tell you the sound that each letter makes as well as the action. If you are not sure about the sound/action, please view the Cued Articulation YouTube video here.
2. Make words with the sound tiles and get your child to say each sound then blend them together to say the word as a whole. See inside your Reading Log Book for word ideas.
3. Read some words from the yellow word list (if your child has one).
4. If your child has a 'sound activity pack' in their satchel, please complete this
OR if your child has a 'blending activity pack' please complete this. Your child should not have both of these.
5. Read and write Heart Words (so far we have learnt 'the, my, I, he).
6. Get your child to read their readers to you, if your child has them.
We write in your child's Reading Log Book every week to let you know how your child is going and what they are working on in their reading. It is also how we keep track of how many times your child has read each book, and when they are ready to move stages, when they have readers.
Please make sure to write which activities you have been doing at home, which stories your child has read, or what you are reading to them, in this book. When your child has readers, you will find the checklist of where to tick off each time they read their book/s at the coloured tab we will place in the Log Book.
In Literacy, we have now learnt the sounds in Stage 1 and 2. There are lots of different 3 letter words we can now read, make, spell and write. We will spend time next week continuing to practise this skill. Then in Term 2, we will begin learning Stage 3 sounds.
To finish the term in Mathematics, we will practise number formation and learn about patterns. We will start next term by continuing to learn about patterns with objects and extend this learning to number patterns.
In Topic, we will continue to focus on our School Values and knowing who to ask when we need help. We will look at how doing challenging things helps our brain to grow.
Next week in Respectful Relationships, we will continue to look at personal and cultural strengths, and learn about sharing and caring from Aboriginal perspectives.
Congratulations to 3/4 Lidgett for winning our first Maths Challenge of the year, with 100% of students participating in the challenge! Please find the answer to last fortnight's challenge below:
