2025 VCE Art Making and Exhibiting

Excursion to Bendigo and LAI
On 26 February, a group of enthusiastic VCE Art Making and Exhibiting students set out on an inspiring journey to Bendigo and the La Trobe Arts Institute (LAI). This excursion was carefully designed to align with VCE outcomes, offering students valuable insights into the professional art world, exhibition curation and design.
The day commenced at LAI, where students were privileged to hear from three past students who shared their experiences and artistic journeys. These engaging talks provided firsthand perspectives on life after VCE, study pathways and the realities of studying VCE Art Making and Exhibiting. The group also had the opportunity to hear from Kylie Banyard, artist and lecturer, who provided valuable insight into contemporary art practices and the intersection between art-making and education. Following this, a curator from the Bendigo Art Gallery, Emma Busowsky, delivered an insightful talk, guiding students through the exhibitions currently on display.
Surrounded by the striking artworks and carefully curated themes of the Bendigo Art Gallery, students immersed themselves in contemporary and historical pieces, analysing artistic techniques, exhibition design and the narratives behind the works. They were encouraged to make connections between these professional displays and their own art-making practices, broadening their understanding of how artists communicate ideas through materials, composition and curatorial choices.
After a break to reflect and discuss their experiences over lunch, students continued their exploration through a guided tour of the gallery. This hands-on engagement allowed them to critically assess exhibition spaces, analyse the presentation of artworks and consider the role of galleries in shaping audience experiences.
As the day ended and the group returned home, their minds were buzzing with fresh ideas and renewed enthusiasm for their own creative projects. This excursion was more than just a day out - it was a pivotal experience that deepened their appreciation for the arts, connected them with industry professionals and reinforced their aspirations as emerging artists and curators.
A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made the day such a rewarding experience.
