Mask Work and Puppet Theatre Workshops with Beth Twentyman and Jenny Ellis

Over the past two weeks, Year 8 and 9 students have had the incredible opportunity to participate in engaging and immersive workshops led by Beth Twentyman and Jenny Ellis.

Beth Twentyman’s mask work sessions introduced students to the art of physical storytelling, emphasising how movement and expression can communicate emotion and narrative without words. Through a series of interactive exercises and performances, students explored character development, stage presence and the power of non-verbal communication, enhancing their confidence and theatrical skills.

Jenny Ellis from Little Wing Puppets led students in an exciting hands-on workshop where they not only learned the fundamentals of puppetry but also constructed and created giant puppets, including Buka the dingo and the Rainbow Serpent. These creations were inspired by the creation story shared by Yorta Yorta Elder, Uncle Des Morgan. The students will showcase their work in the Arts Academy End-of-Year Performance, bringing these culturally significant puppets to life on stage.

Both workshops have provided students with invaluable skills in performance, collaboration and creative expression. The experience has been a fantastic addition to their drama studies, expanding their artistic perspectives and reinforcing the power of storytelling through movement and puppetry.

We extend our sincere thanks to Beth Twentyman and Jenny Ellis for sharing their expertise and passion with our students, as well as to Uncle Des Morgan for his storytelling and cultural knowledge.
