PRIMARY (F-6)

School Leaders Report - Kara and Emma

Happy mid term! We’ve risen to the top of the hill and are looking back at all we’ve achieved, and the quick descent coming our way to get to the bottom!  (School holidays and Easter celebrations).

This week and next are only four day weeks with Friday being a pupil free, and Monday - Labour Day public holiday.

NAPLAN

When students return next week, theYear 3 and Year 5 will begin NAPLAN. We always approach these weeks with a positive attitude and the understanding that NAPLAN assessments measure each of us on just one day of our year! It’s a measure looking for growth every two years and each of us need only do our best and for that our Learning Mentors, families and most of all ourselves can be proud.

Please refer to the Daily Messages on PAM for information on the NAPLAN as well as a breakdown of what tests are taking place each day.

SUCCESS

We congratulated Lauren on Monday at assembly for her Grand Final win in cricket on the weekend. Lauren leads her team with motivation, enthusiasm and passion to do her best each week on and off the field. Lauren had the St Anne’s College cheer squad present, and some incredible posters which were flying boldly.

SHROVE TUESDAY

Thank you to Mez and the team for baking pancakes for us all in Primary. They were delicious and a great conversation starter about the important Lenten season we are entering. You can find photos from the day in the Around the College section.

ASH WEDNESDAY LITURGY

Father Ruel joined us to celebrate our Ash Wednesday liturgy this week. Ashes were distributed in the shape of a cross to those who chose. You can find photos from the day in the Catholic Identity section.

MORNING ROUTINE

You may have noticed the change in the morning routine in the Primary School. In working with Knowledge Society, as part of Magnify Sandhurst, each learning space has a consistent routine. Consistency is predictable, and enables students to have success on arrival to school. Children may choose an option from step 2 or step 3 below; they may change their choice each day depending on whether they feel they need calm, quiet and settling time, or feeling enthusiastic with energy to burn!

Primary Assembly

The Year 6 students were at the helm of of the Primary Assembly tand what a fantastic job they did! Led by Lara and Avaya, the assemblies will continue to be led by different Year 6 students throughout the year and each class will have their turn at sharing something during the assembly.

Year 6 student Charlotte entertained the audience with a fabulous video which showed her interviewing various students about one of the St Anne’s College values - Always Do Our Best. Charlotte asked each student how they embody this value while they are at school - congratulations to Charlotte for this great video!

The assembly was also a chance to congratulate teacher Lauren for her amazing efforts in her cricket grand final yesterday. Lauren’s team came away with the win! Well done Lauren!

Bravehearts Ditto Show

We all have the right to feel safe with people. That is one of the many important things the Foundation to Year 2 students learned when they received a visit from Ditto and the Bravehearts Keep Safe Adventure Show earlier this week.

The students were very excited to see Ditto who taught them about personal safety principles by using three easy-to-remember ‘rules’ that are reinforced through song. A big thank you to Ditto for sharing his wisdom with our students.

Foundation

Foundation students are continuing their learning with letter and sound identification. This week students explored letters ‘m’ and ‘s’, their sounds and words beginning with these letters. Students also continued learning about rhyming words through a range of games and picture book stories.

Foundation students joined the Grade 1 and 2 students to attend Bravehearts Ditto this week. Students learned about personal safety and what they can do when they feel unsafe.

In RE Foundation students have been exploring the importance of Prayer and scripture. Students engaged in a Godly play story about Jesus and prayer. They then worked collaboratively in small groups to recreate the story with loose parts and shared their work with the class.

Year 1

The Year 1 students started the week with a delicious treat, enjoying hot pancakes together for Shrove Tuesday. Following this, they participated in the Ash Wednesday liturgy, reflecting on the significance of Lent.

Year 2

Literacy

This fortnight in Year 2, students have been learning new spellings for long vowel sounds, focusing on the "bossy e" split digraph. We’ve also spent time exploring the features of informative texts and read a text about the famous Australian landmark, Uluru. In Grammar, we learned how pronouns can replace nouns to improve sentence fluency.

Mathematics

In Maths, students have begun learning about time, focusing on reading o’clock and half-past times on an analogue clock by identifying the hour hand’s position.

Inquiry

As part of our "Who We Are" unit, students have been working with the Year 1s to explore physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing. They gathered picture examples and created posters on iPads to showcase their understanding.

Year 3/4

Mathematics

In Year 3/4 Mathematics, children have been consolidating their knowledge of place value, and extending their understanding of addition and subtraction equations. We have been adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers on a number line and counting on and back by ones, tens and hundreds.

Literacy

Children have been expanding their vocabulary this term while reading Matilda; we’ve been using words like ‘eccentric’, ‘appalling’, ‘loathes’ and ‘witty’. They have investigated what it was like to be a student in the ‘old days’; many children like the idea of using inkwells, but none of them liked the idea of getting ‘the cane’!

Year 5

Year 5 children have demonstrated great flexibility, collaboration and communication over the last fortnight. Kara and Bek have been at MultiLit Professional Development meaning sometimes other adults have been in class. The wonderful learning has continued and it’s a credit to each member of our space in being their best each day and helping out our new adult members.

School photos took place. We scrubbed up a treat and I look forward to seeing our photo when it comes later in the year!

Year 1LH have been spending time with us the last few Thursdays. We have been role models, mentors and team mates while playing maths games and board games. This week we have spent time making books. Year 1 children were generating ideas while we practiced transferring our narrative writing skills from literacy lessons into writing a book. Together, we communicated clearly, made connections between abstract ideas, and practiced including the who, what, where, problem and solution into our books. Hopefully they will be finished soon!

Year 6

In maths, the Year 6 students are learning on the order of operations that combine sums with multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. We have also been looking at brackets in the equations and which equation to solve first.

In English the Year 6 students are learning about prefixes and suffixes. They also focused on sounds like ‘ph’ makes an 'f' sound and much more. They finished a book called "A Ghost in My Suitcase". The book was about a young girl travelling from Australia to China who meets her Por Por  (Grandmother) she goes ghost hunting with her Por Por and fights the scariest battle of her life.

In inquiry the Year 6 students are learning about the rules and laws in our country and to become a global citizen. They learnt the different rules in our community and what would happen if we took out some rules in our community.
