Learning and Teaching

Anna Robertson

Welcome back to Term Two, I hope all our families were able to enjoy some rest and relaxation together over the break.

In Assembly last week, as we welcomed back our students and staff, I shared again my favourite word, Curiosity, in light of World Creativity and Innovation Day, which was celebrated on Tuesday, 21 April. This day provides an opportunity to recognise the thinking, curiosity and problem‑solving that underpin learning across our school. Whether in classrooms or through global achievements such as NASA’s recent Artemis missions, progress is driven by creative and innovative thinking. As we begin Term Two, I encourage students to set meaningful goals and establish positive learning habits, reflecting on what can be achieved through consistent effort and commitment over the next ten weeks. I reminded our students that we have high expectations of them because we believe in them and what they can achieve.

Another busy term of learning lies ahead, and I want to support and encourage students to maximise the learning opportunities presented to them. This is not always easy, and we all know that building strong habits in study and organisation can be challenging for young people – and adults alike!  In reviewing our data, it is clear that some students need further support and motivation to build consistent habits for completing homework tasks and, in some cases, classwork. To support them in this, we are introducing Homework Club from the beginning of this term. Teaching staff will refer students to Homework Club when the reasonable expectations for completing set homework or classwork tasks have not been met. I will be running Homework Club every Friday for the first 30 minutes of lunchtime, and students will be required to bring the work they need to complete and their lunch. I hope this will provide an opportunity for students to complete the required work, seek support if needed, and allow us to monitor and support students who may need extra guidance in building these habits for themselves.

This week, we held our Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews with subject teachers at the Senior School. Working with the new Paperly system presented some challenges, and I appreciated your flexibility and patience with the updates. It was a wonderful opportunity for families and teachers to share about learning and discuss next steps for students, ensuring a strong connection between school and home – a significant partnership.  A reminder that our Continuous Reporting model allows parents and carers access to ongoing updates about their child/ren’s learning from Prep through to Year 12, and that this can be accessed via Toddle at any time.

We are delighted to welcome Mr Adam Golding and Mr Simon Karanja to our teaching staff for Term Two and Term Three, and they have settled in very well, commenting on how welcoming and supportive all students and the College community have been.

New Career Opportunities with Old Collegians

We are excited to announce a new careers initiative led by Alana Brown, connecting students with our Old Collegians and local professionals to share their career journeys since leaving school. This program offers students the chance to hear firsthand about a diverse range of career paths, listen to inspiring stories, and engage in face-to-face conversations by asking questions. It’s a valuable opportunity for students to gain real-world insights, explore future possibilities, and be inspired by those who have gone before them. Please encourage your child to sign up and make the most of this amazing opportunity. More information about this program is available on the Careers page of this newsletter.
