Year 10 Work Experience

2026 Work Experience Week
Last week, I completed my Year 10 Work Experience placement, and it was honestly one of the most interesting weeks of school so far this year. I was nervous on the first day because I didn’t know what I was walking into, didn’t know if the staff would be nice, and was worried I would mess something up. Luckily, everyone was really welcoming and helped me settle in quickly.
I got to experience what it is really like to work in a professional environment. I learned how important teamwork, communication, punctuality, and responsibility are in the workforce. One of the biggest differences from school was seeing how everyone has to work together to get jobs completed on time, it took me a while to get the hang of it.
Some of my daily tasks included helping staff, organising materials, observing different jobs, answering questions, interacting with the public, and learning how the workplace runs behind the scenes. At first I felt awkward around everyone, but by the end of the week I felt much more confident speaking up and taking initiative.
One of the highlights of the week was getting involved in real workplace activities instead of just watching from the side. It was also fun meeting new people and hearing about their career pathways and experiences. I learned that people do not always end up in the job they originally planned, which made me feel less stressed about the future and decisions I have to make.
Of course, waking up at a different time every day was definitely a challenge, and by Friday I was exhausted! The experience gave me a much better understanding of what life after school can look like and helped me think more seriously about future career options.
Overall, Work Experience was a valuable opportunity that taught me important life skills, increased my confidence, and gave me a better appreciation for the world of work. I am grateful for the opportunity and would encourage future Year 10 students to make the most of it.
