Specialist Happenings

Visual Arts
There has been so much happening in art this term. After our wonderful sail win with the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, we jumped straight into our school inclusivity mural. This mural is based on the theme that everyone's ideas matter, and is sponsored by Posca, which is definitely a win in the student's eyes. A big shout out to Orla and Alex in year 6 who beautifully assisted Rox Martyn (our Posca mural artist) in co-ordinating student artists. Everyone has had a ball so far and hopefully we can get even more students to participate when Rox returns to complete the project.
We have been doing some Halloween activities with the year 3's creating some sustainable haunted houses from unwanted materials.

Mandarin
Our Grade 1 and 2 students have been learning about the four seasons in Mandarin — an exciting extension of last term’s weather topic.
This week, students practised describing each season and expressing their preferences using full sentences. They can now say sentences such as:我喜欢夏天因为很热。 (Wǒ xǐhuān xiàtiān yīnwèi hěn rè.) – “I like summer because it is very hot.”
It’s been wonderful to see students confidently sharing their ideas in Mandarin and beginning to connect their language learning with real-life experiences!
You are all amazing!

Physical Education
Level F- 2
Our Foundation to Year 2 students have been exploring target games over the past fortnight, with a special focus on teamwork, creativity, and having fun! Working in small groups, students designed and built their very own mini golf holes using a range of equipment and imaginative ideas. Once the course was complete, everyone had the chance to play through, keeping personal scores and celebrating each other’s efforts.
Level 3 & 4
Over the past three weeks, our Level 3 and 4 students have had the opportunity to work with coaches Jack and Austin from MCC Lacrosse, who introduced us to the exciting sport of lacrosse. Students had a great time learning new skills such as scooping, catching, and throwing the ball, while building confidence and teamwork along the way. Even Mrs Foster picked up a few new tricks! Fun fact: Lacrosse will feature in the upcoming Olympic Games, and Australian lacrosse organisers are already looking to develop future athletes in the lead-up to Brisbane 2032. If your child is interested in giving lacrosse a go, please check out the flyer about the upcoming 6-week program at Beaumaris Secondary College.
Level 5 and 6
Our Level 5 and 6 students have been continuing to develop their game sense and skills through invasion sports, with a focus on basketball over the past fortnight. While skill development is an important part of the Level 5 and 6 PE curriculum, there is also a strong emphasis on teamwork, communication, and leadership. It has been fantastic to see students not only competing enthusiastically but also supporting and coaching classmates who are less familiar with the game.
SEPS girls Volleyball Team
As mentioned last issue, our girls’ volleyball team reached the divisional finals this year — an outstanding achievement! On Monday, they played three exciting matches, winning two and narrowly missing out on the third in a close tie-breaker. The team has shown tremendous commitment throughout the season, training hard and consistently demonstrating our school values both on and off the court. We are so proud of their effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship!

Science
This fortnight our young scientists have focussed on: -
Foundation - The 3 Rs Reduce Reuse Recycle
This term the Foundation students will continue to focus on the reuse of the Earth's precious resources. We have learnt about the life cycle of a plastic bottle and we are now considering how a plastic bottle could be reused as a terrarium.
Level 1 & 2 - Sound
Level 1 and 2 are learning that sound is created by vibrations. We have then made rubber band, rule and cork string instruments. We have varied the pitch by changing the length of the string.
Level 3 & 4 - Plant Structures and Life Cycles
We are investigating the structure of flowers and we are beginning to learn about the process of pollination.
Level 5 & 6 - Energy
Our senior students have been building circuits to power a light or a buzzer. We are learning about the movement of energy around the circuit.
