Remembrance Day Ceremony - 10.30 Tuesday 11th November.
We have a wonderful group of Level 5 students running our annual Remembrance Day service. You are warmly welcome to attend.
Market Day and Trash'n'Treasure
Level 5 enjoyed another successful Market Day.
We were so impressed with our team of students who managed the Trash'n'Treasure stall. These students were also supported by most students in Level 5 who jumped on board for a ten minute slot to take the money and answer questions.
SEPS idol
We had a group of Level 5 students who stepped up to run our annual SEPS Idol. The students ran auditions over 6 lunchtimes, assessing each act against an audition rubric. The students then organised our finals, communicating with students and organising the prizes.
On the day of the SEPS Idol Finals, our students took on the huge challenge of selecting our winners.
Inquiry
This fortnight, our Year 5 students have been investigating the events and impact of the Eureka Rebellion as part of their History Inquiry unit. They began by analysing a re-enactment of the rebellion to generate inquiry questions and guide their research. Through activities such as creating domino-style cause-and-effect diagrams and contributing to a collaborative class magazine, students explored how one event can shape another in history. They also learned how to identify reliable online sources and practised safe research habits. By developing “What if?” scenarios, students strengthened their critical thinking skills—considering how different choices or outcomes might have changed Australia’s history.
Maths
This fortnight Level 5 students have learnt about the creation of timelines, which supports our learning in History. The students learnt that timelines have set intervals and record significant events. The students created their own timeline about the Gold Rush.
Students have then learnt about percentages, including calculating a percentage of an amount and using the percentage to calculate the total.
Literacy
In Reading, our Year 5 students have been delving into the powerful picture book One Minute’s Silence by David Metzenthen and Michael Camilleri. Through thoughtful discussion and analysis, students explored how illustrations and words work together to shape the reader’s understanding, emotions, and perspective. They reflected deeply on the imagery and symbolism within the text, considering how both visual and written language communicate the experiences of soldiers and the meaning behind remembrance. This learning has encouraged students to think critically and empathetically about the stories that shape our history.

Writing - Persuasive
Over the past fortnight, Year 5 students have been exploring a range of writing skills inspired by our mentor text The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. Using this novel as a model, students have practised expanding and summarising sentences to strengthen their writing fluency and precision. They have also identified and discussed language features and persuasive devices commonly used to influence a reader’s thoughts and emotions. Through these activities, students are learning how authors craft their messages and how they can apply similar techniques in their own writing.
