Co-Curricular Wrap Up!

Co-curricular Electives Program at Lakes Entrance Secondary College
In the second half of Term 3 and the first half of Term 4, to build student engagement and explore some new hands-on skills and social connections, students in Year 7 to 10 took part in a cross-age Co-curricular Electives Program. This program took place each Wednesday afternoon during period 4 and 5 over a five-week period.
In addition to students developing new skills with different social groups, it was great for students to see staff teaching in different areas of interest for them. Some staff have skills in gardening, specialised areas of technology, or art which they don’t necessarily work in as teachers, so the Co-curricular Electives Program provided a significant varied context for all involved.
In Cycle 1 students had the choice between:
Gardening
Fitness
Strategic Games
Independent Art Project/Mosaics
Food for Eating and Market Fundraising
Business Enterprise for Market Fundraising
Solar Cars
Robotics/STEM
Making Fishing Rods
In Cycle 2 students had the choice between:
Golf
Gardening
Strategic Games
Textiles
Painting and Drawing
Woodwork
Making Fishing Gear
Food for Eating and Market Fundraising
Hair and Makeup
It took students a short time to get into a different routine on a Wednesday afternoon as we had an early lunch each day of the program, and then we ran Period 4 and 5 back-to-back. However, by Cycle 2 many students were really looking forward to the areas of focus they had chosen each Wednesday. Students were surveyed regarding the Co-curricular Program to gauge their interest and to find out what students felt worked well and what required improvement. Survey results were overwhelmingly positive, so we are looking forward to continuing the Program for Cycle 3 in Term 1, 2026.
Students have had significant input into some of the electives on offer. Hair and Makeup came from the students, as did Textiles, and Painting and Drawing, but we would like our students to continue to share elective ideas that they would like to learn about, as this is the student’s program and we want them to not only share ideas but as appropriate to take a lead in the classes.
