Year 9 - High Tea
Adam Given - Head of Year 9
On Friday 28 November, Year 9 students and staff welcomed residents from Chrinside Views and Warrandyte Gardens aged care facilities to a High Tea in the Library to celebrate the conclusion of our 2025 intergenerational program. Throughout Terms 3 and 4, our students visited these facilities and were always greeted with enthusiasm and warmth. The Year 9 Team felt it was important to return this generosity by hosting an event that showed the residents how much we valued their time and company.
Fifty residents, seven students from Mullum-Mullum Primary School, and special guests including MP Nick McGowan, College SEIL John Roberts, and College Council President Sue Brophy joined us for a wonderful morning of music, conversation, and great food.
The Library was transformed for the occasion. Guests were greeted by a striking balloon arch that quickly became a popular photo spot. Tables were dressed with tablecloths and set with ceramic cups, saucers, and plates. Each setting was brightened with fresh flowers, yellow and blush napkins, and a selection of ‘Would You Rather?’ and ‘Chit Chat’ cards to help spark conversations, although they were rarely needed.
The delicious food, including homemade scones and sausage rolls, was prepared by our Café Bakery students with support from our dedicated Food Technology teachers and staff. Everything was beautifully presented on High Tea stands, and there was more than enough to ensure our guests left satisfied. Our students took on the role of hosts, serving food along with hot tea and coffee.
Two musical performances entertained guests throughout the morning. Beau F (Year 9) played an AC/DC medley that had everyone moving in their seats, followed by a beautiful contemporary classical piece performed by Isaac L (Year 9). The biggest surprise, however, came when Vic (a resident of Chrinside Views), Mr Adam Given (Head of Year 9), and Miller P (Year 9) delivered an unexpected yodelling performance. As one staff member remarked, “[we] may not have been good, but [we] were enthusiastic.”
Eventually the morning drew to a close. Residents were escorted to their bus by our students, who helped push wheelchairs, carried bags, and offered support as needed. Each resident received a gift bag containing a selection of treats and a handwritten card from a Year 9 student.
Norwood staff are very proud of how the students prepared for, hosted, and packed up after the event. They demonstrated maturity, respect, and responsibility, and represented the College exceptionally well. Their efforts show they are ready to transition into Senior School, and both Mr Adam Given (Head of Year 9) and Ms Christina Bukojemski (Year 9 Coordinator) are extremely proud of them.
A big thank you to all staff who contributed to making this event possible, including Christina Bukojemski, Jacki Landy, Miranda Butterfield, Keira Foley, Lisa Telford, Brodie Smith, Eliza Pumpa, Jan Grills, Paula Dettman, Tom Lennon, Maddy Sweeney, Michelle Toye, Linda Mill, Deb Major, Jono Flack, and everyone else who helped make the morning so special.
