This month in Visual Arts, students have been bringing their creativity to life through printmaking, exploring colour, pattern, texture, and composition. Across all year levels, they have been developing skills, experimenting with new techniques, and producing bold, imaginative artworks. Keep reading to see the fantastic projects your children have been creating!
Our Foundation friends have been creating colourful heart prints inspired by the story The Shape of My Heart. In Lesson 1, students made symmetrical heart templates, added foam sticker patterns, rolled paint over their designs, and printed them onto black paper. In Lesson 2, they painted bright backgrounds and arranged their printed hearts to create bold, eye-catching artworks. This activity helped students explore pattern, printing, and composition in a fun and creative way.

Our Year One printmakers have been exploring dinosaur-inspired printmaking. First, students painted the bodies of their stegosaurus using bright inks and watercolour and added markings with chalk pastels. They then used sponges to print the dinosaur’s iconic back plates, creating vibrant, textured designs. This hands-on process helped students experiment with colour, pattern, and texture while bringing their prehistoric creatures to life.

Our Year Two makers have been busy creating vibrant 3D Rainbow Lions. In Lesson 1, students painted their lion’s mane and added layers of colourful tissue paper to build texture and brightness. In Lesson 2, they decorated the lion’s face and ears, then attached them to the mane to bring their lion to life in 3D. Students enjoyed exploring colour, layering, and construction while creating these bold, cheerful artworks.

Our Year Three artists have been exploring radial design printmaking, inspired by Cassie Stephens. First, students created their own radial arrangements using foam stickers and painted colourful backgrounds ready for printing. They then painted over their foam designs and pressed them onto their backgrounds to reveal bold, symmetrical prints. This hands-on process helped students understand radial balance while experimenting with colour, pattern, and texture.

Our Year Four designers have been creating bold and colourful Pop Art Animals. In Week 5, students designed vibrant collage backgrounds using decorated and coloured papers. First, they selected an animal image and drew it with careful detail onto A4 transparency film, layering it over their background to create a striking Pop Art effect. This project encouraged students to focus on detail, composition, and creative use of colour while exploring a fun and expressive art style.

Our Year Five artisans have been exploring radial symmetry printmaking. They painted vibrant rainbow spiral backgrounds and created their radial designs on paper, transferring them onto foam to make their printing plates. Students then practiced their designs on scrap paper before rolling them onto their rainbow backgrounds. This hands-on process allowed students to experiment with colour, pattern, and texture while developing an understanding of radial symmetry.

Year Six creators have begun designing their own skateboards. They have been planning their process, deciding which layers to paint first, and exploring how to transfer their images onto the deck. Students have started sanding and undercoating their boards in preparation for adding their detailed designs. This exciting project allows students to experiment with stenciling, painting, and spray paint techniques as they begin creating their “legacy” artworks.

We are looking forward to fun last 4 weeks of term, full of more print making activities and of course some Christmas themed artwork too!
