Respectful Relationships

As part of our wellbeing sessions this term, students from Foundation to Year 6 have been learning about Positive Gender Relations through the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program. This topic supports students to build respectful, safe and inclusive relationships with others.

Foundation – Year 2: Students explored what respectful behaviour looks like, using kind words, and recognising personal space. They also learned that toys, colours and activities are for everyone, not just for boys or girls (e.g., “Anyone can play with blocks or dress-ups”). They practised sharing, taking turns and solving small disagreements calmly.

Years 3 – 4: Students discussed fairness, including others, and communicating

respectfully. They learned that gender stereotypes can limit people, such as the idea that only boys play certain sports or only girls like art. They explored examples of people choosing activities based on interest, not gender. Students also reviewed what healthy friendships look like and how to support peers.

Years 5 – 6: Students examined gender stereotypes in more depth, looking at how messages such as “boys shouldn’t show feelings” or “girls should act a certain way” can affect wellbeing and relationships. They discussed how power dynamics can show up in groups and friendships, and practised conflict-resolution and assertive communication skills. Students also considered how to challenge stereotypes and help create a safe, inclusive school environment.

We encourage you to chat with your child about the different ways they can show respect, challenge stereotypes and support positive relationships at school and at home.
