Auslan Report

Dear Parents and Carers,
During week 4 in Auslan, Grade Preps will learn about Sport and 1-6 students will learn about Time. During Week 2, Grade Preps will learn about Meal Times and Grade 1-6 students will learn signs for Around the House.
When Grade Prep students learn about Sport, they will identify different sports using Auslan. The activity will entail matching signs to the sporting pictures. Grade Preps will also learn the sports poem and discuss their favourite sports with their peers using the signs learnt. The following signs will be taught to students:
Sport
ball
soccer
football
basketball
tennis
rugby
netball
cricket
athletics
swimming
team
win
lose.
When learning about Time, Grade 1/2 students will practise counting numbers in Auslan which was previously taught. As the new signs for ‘time’ are learnt, the students will play a game called ‘What’s the time crocodile?’ This activity will encourage Grade 1/2 students to use only Auslan with no voices. Grade 3/4 students will also practise numbers and then they will participate in a story map activity. This will involve writing times given in Auslan by the teacher, and creating quick drawings of events on the map. Grade 5/6 students will do an Auslan Day retell. The students will assist each other to retell their day, or a typical day, in Auslan. They will use time signs and other signs that they have been previously taught e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime and after school activities/sport/hobbies. The Time signs learnt will be:
time
clock
o’clock
half past
quarter past
quarter to
Numbers 1-12 (revision).
When Grade Preps learn about Meal Times they will learn to recite ‘The Mealtime Poem’ in Auslan. The learning activity will also involve students drawing their breakfast including a spoon or knife. The lesson will conclude with Grade Preps sharing their breakfast drawing with their peers by using Auslan to communicate. Students will learn the following signs for Meal Times:
Breakfast
morning tea
lunch
afternoon tea
dinner
dessert
snack
eat
drink
knife
fork
spoon
plate
bowl.
When learning about ‘Around the House’, Grade 1/2 students will play a ‘four corners’ game. This will involve pictures of around the house items placed in the classroom. Students will stand in the centre of the room and watch for the teacher to sign a word. Students must move to that picture as quickly and safely as possible to signify that they understood the Auslan sign. Grade 3/4 students will sketch and describe their bathroom with signs taught, including numbers and colours. Students will share their bathroom descriptions to their peers using Auslan. Grade 5/6 students will begin their lesson with revising clothing signs previously taught. The students will continue their learning by working in pairs to present a Washing Day Story. Students will learn the following Around the House signs:
Bathroom
mirror
toilet
sink/basin
laundry
towel
washing machine
shower
bath
tap
clothes line
clothes basket.
As our students build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students! Please scan the QR Code below which will provide you with YouTube videos to assist in practising together at home.
Keep updated on learning Auslan each fortnight in our Partners in Learning Newsletter during Term 4.
