Tips for Starting School

Establish a calm evening routine
Children learn best when they’re well rested. Aim for a consistent bedtime and quiet wind-down routine that includes reading together, reducing screen time, and preparing for the next day.
Build independence through small daily tasks
Encourage your child to take responsibility for small things; packing their bag, putting on shoes, or unpacking lunch. These routines help build confidence and independence.
Read and talk together every day
Reading aloud, talking about stories, and exploring new words all build your child’s vocabulary and love of learning. Ask open-ended questions like “What do you think will happen next?” to spark curiosity.
Practice active listening and following instructions
Play simple games that involve listening and responding, such as “Simon Says” or following multi-step directions. These skills help children engage confidently in class routines.
Encourage curiosity and noticing
Talk about what you see on walks, cook together, explore nature, and ask “why” questions. These small moments build background knowledge that supports early Science, Maths, and Literacy learning.
Help your child feel confident about making friends
Talk about what being a kind and helpful friend looks like; sharing, taking turns, and using kind words. Arrange playdates if possible, to help your child practice social skills, and to stay connected.
Stay connected with your child’s teachers
A strong partnership between home and school makes a big difference. Share information about your child, ask questions, and celebrate their successes together.
