Principal's Message

We will be holding our annual Easter Egg hamper raffle at assembly on Monday 31 March. This is a highlight of the year as our children’s faces light up as their names are splashed across the big screen when they win.

We will be using the big wheel on the screen to draw out the winners again this year as this adds an extra level of excitement to the raffle. We are still short of donations. To make it a fantastic fundraiser we would really appreciate any Easter themed gifts to be dropped off at the Office by no later than 9am Monday 31 March.

Parent Teacher interviews

It has been pleasing to see that most families have signed up for parent teacher interviews that will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. If you haven’t signed up yet and would like to meet with your child’s class teacher, please see the link that was sent out via Compass last week.

We are trialing having the interviews at the end of Term 1 for the first time. This is in response to the survey that was sent out last year. Most families indicated that they would like an earlier discussion with their child’s class teacher so that they could be better informed about their child’s learning progress and learning needs.

Working Bee update

Thank you to those families who gave of their time at our working bee this week. We had a smaller than normal turnout but were still able to get so much done. The Kitchen Garden area is starting to really come to life. It’s a fantastic place for our Year 3/4 children to learn during their kitchen garden lessons and for the rest of the school to access for Science and Sustainability lessons.

A big thank you to Erin Blyth who did an awesome job blowing the leaves and branches from the mini oval. Erin spent most of the working bee on the blower and then stayed for an extended period of time to finish the job.

Bushfire Information Session

We hosted a Bushfire Information session at school earlier this week. It was a really productive evening as Ben from the Montrose CFA spoke about the dangers of ember attacks, the risk of radiant heat and of the importance of having a solid fire plan that you stick to on days of extreme and catastrophic fire risk.  The CFA will be sending out some information to all families soon.

Kate from the Department of Education Emergency Division discussed that the Department of Education is always monitoring fire risk, particularly in the Dandenong Ranges. She explained why schools have the bushfire ratings that they do and reinforced our school’s emergency plan and the support that would be available to the school as soon as a bushfire emergency was reported.

Epilepsy Awareness Day

On the 26th of March, staff at Billanook wore purple to help bring awareness to epilepsy. This sparked student’s curiosity throughout the day and staff were able to have discussions with students and answer their questions.
