Principal's Message

“To love God and neighbour is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him

concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, the face of Jesus.”

  • Pope Francis, Address during a visit to a homeless shelter.

Dear Parents/Carers,

I was fortunate, a few years ago, to attend a two-day professional development course that looked at the life of Pope Francis and in particular his writings and spirituality. As we have seen over the past few years, even non-Christians have been fascinated by this man who has graced the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine and been named Times’ ‘Man Of The Year’. His recent illness created world-wide headlines as the hospital where he was staying was beamed around the world on our television screens.

Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio) was an Italian migrant to Argentina, born in 1936 and ordained a Priest in 1969. Jorge was made an Archbishop Of Buenos Aries in 1998 and he was known for the simple way he lived his life. Even when made a Cardinal in 2001, he would cook for himself, travel around by public transport and spend a lot of his time working in the slum areas around his country. In fact during his time as Cardinal, he doubled the number of Priests working in the slum areas, created many new Parishes and looked for ways that the poor could be supported financially by the Church. Being a member of the Jesuit order, he has always modelled a real spirituality of discernment based on listening to what God wanted him to do. Pope Francis’ solidarity with the poor and those who are marginalised, his acknowledgement of the importance of both the Western and Eastern traditions, as well as non-Christian traditions and his humility in both his own person and that of the Church, have made him an inspiring figure around the globe.

The words that began this Newsletter are particularly relevant as we prepare to celebrate the Easter Season. As much as we love the gift-giving nature of this time of year, with the fun of the Show and the Easter Eggs we know that, as Christians, there is so much more meaning to Easter. Only last week, a number of our students celebrated God's great gift of forgiveness as they received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time.

The message for our students is centred on Faith in Action – the way we treat others so that they gain an understanding that WE are the face of Christ. The same understanding that is modelled by our Pope.

I take this opportunity, on behalf of all the staff, to wish all our students a well-deserved break and we look forward to beginning a new term with renewed vitality and enthusiasm.

Kind Regards

Steve Darcy (Principal)
