Kids Corner

The “Kids’ Corner” section of our school newsletter provides the opportunity for the children to showcase their talents or communicate something special.
This fortnight, Liam (Year 2) would like to share his writing about his favourite season and 5E are sharing their camp recounts. I trust you enjoy them just as much as I did!
My Favourite Season
by Liam
My Favourite Season is winter. I like it white fluffy snow.
I like it when it is snowing, I can wear my snow boots, snow jacket and snow pants.
Before I go out to play outside, I put on my beanie and my gloves too.
I love making a snowman. I would like to slide down the snow on a toboggan.
Winter is the best!

My favourite thing about camp kids was going to see the honeybees. I liked it because we learnt very interesting facts about them, and I found out that not all bees stings. At the end we even got to try and flavoured honey we wanted. My favourite flavour ended up being blue gum from the fruity range.
The three-day camp helped me learn more about Ned Kelly and the Gold Rush. For the Ned Kelly tour I learnt that his father died so he was the man of his family, and he had to earn money and provide all the things for everyone. For Gold Rush I also learnt that not everyone who went there became rich and got rich. There was a lot of gold when we were doing gold planning, but they were tiny.
One of the school values I showed was Respect. I always used my manners. For example, I said “please” and “thank you” when being served food. I helped cleaning the tables after use and used proper dining manners when eating.
I was responsible when we were at Camp by following my group leaders and not wandered off. I had to be mindful when we were in public, especially within a large group, especially when crossing the road. When we were on the streets we couldn’t just stop and chat to each other, because that would be dangerous. I am very grateful to my teachers, because they have been looking after all of us and they slept after us, which is very kind.

Camp was the best. We got to do a lot of fun things like gold panning, ice-cream shop, candy shop, courthouse, honey school, the jail, museum. Ned Kelly walking tour and a lot more stuff. But three things I like the most are courthouse, gold panning, and the museum. I liked the gold panning because I was able to find some gold. Gold is okay to bite to see if it is real gold, but I don’t think that is a good idea. I liked the experience, and I was able to find $100 worth of gold.
I liked the courthouse because we were able to watch a short film, and it went on the walls of the courthouse. We were able to look at some armour that Ned Kelly has used before. And lastly the museum - I liked it because we were able to look at some old cameras and see how they worked.
The camp helped deepen my understanding of the Australian History be teaching me new things about Ned Kelly. Ned is a famous bushranger, and he is a very controversial person too. I found out Ned was sent to jail at a young age and the harsh conditions he was living in when he was a child. I also found something very interesting, is that the old jail is actually spelt as “gaol”.
The school value I demonstrated was Respect. I respected everyone in my group, including their belongings, personal space and how I communicated with each other. I also was responsible for myself by looking after my personal stuff and not leaving anything behind.
I showed mindfulness in my cabin. When it was a little noisy in the room, I practised mindful breathing and only focused on my current task –sleeping, to fall asleep. That has helped me to have a good rest.
