Student Voice

Prep
On Thursday, our Prep team were joined by their six Junior School Council representatives to provide feedback on their learning. Students had the opportunity to share what they love learning about in class, as well as make suggestions to how and what they would like to learn about in Term 2!
The Preps' key takeaways included:
They loved:
- Completing Maths activities in rotation formats with lots of 'hands on' opportunities (e.g play doh, number mats, racks etc)
- Free choice writing sessions where they get to choose what they draw and write about.
- Talking about their Families in Inquiry tasks throughout the term.
They wanted more of:
- Rotation options in independent and small group tasks (in Writing and Readers' Workshops)
- Variety of opportunities to show their understanding using materials like play doh and pom poms.
- Special visitors (e.g the Police) to teach them all about their very interesting jobs!

On Thursday, the Year One teaching team had some lovely visitors to our planning day to give suggestions for Term Two!
The Year One Junior School Council representatives had the opportunity to ask their peers during class meetings what they wanted more or less of during their learning.
The feedback they provided was a fantastic insight into what the students want and was a great way for teachers to directly hear student voice.
The students loved:
Time with their maths buddies playing maths games
Using mini whiteboards during instruction times
LOVED learning about Ancient Egypt and are keen to study another mini-humanities topic
Participating in whole-level rotations for inquiry
They would like to change:
- mixing up maths buddies so we can do maths with more people
- using whiteboards more often
- more time engaging in choice writing
- mix up all of the grade 1s into three random groups for rotations so we can spend time with different people
The JSC have said that the students would also like to go an excursion, so keep your eyes peeled for a visit out of the school next term 🙂
The Grade One teachers LOVED hearing these suggestions and have already put them into our planning for Term 2.
It was so nice to see Student Voice and Agency in action!

During our Planning Day on Tuesday last week, the Grade 3/4 teachers met with the 3/4 JSC representatives. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear the fantastic ideas about what the students love about learning in Grade 3/4 at Mitcham and suggestions for other things we could do at school.
Things they loved and want more of:
- Using devices and interactive activities such as Times Table Rockstars, Get Epic, Kahoot etc
- Doing lots of group/partner work
- Playing Maths games and using hands on materials in lessons
- Being able to do learning tasks out of the classroom sometimes
- Free writing, independent reading tasks and having the opportunity to turn and talk to a partner during class discussions
Students also had other amazing suggestions such as Wrapper Free Wednesday and doing activities together as a 3/4 cohort.
