Out and About

Future Makers
Each year our Year 9’s take part in the Future Makers program run by The Outdoor School – Bogong. Future Makers is a self-development program designed to help develop confidence in the areas of team work, self-reliance and resilience. This is achieved through group activities, volunteering, outdoor education activities and reflection sessions. Teachers from both Mount Beauty Secondary College and The Outdoor School deliver elements of the program with a collegiate team teaching approach.
This year, our year 9’s participated in the camp from the 24th of February through to the 6th of March. As part of the camp, students participated in rock climbing, abseiling, bridge building, orienteering, rogaining and a 5 day journey. It was great to see the growth that occurred throughout the camp, particularly on the journey. The students had a fantastic time and will finish off their Future Makers journey in Term 3 by completing a day of volunteering, where they will assist in setting up the start and finish area for the Kangaroo Hoppet.
Here's what students had to say about the experience:
I was very nervous to be away from my family for so long, and I did miss home quite a lot. But it was very fun. I loved the abseiling, leap of faith, and the movie night.
When I got back from the 5 day hike, I felt pretty sad. I liked doing the high ropes course.
I was super excited to spend two weeks at camp.
The things I loved most were the climbing, abseiling, high ropes course and making new friends.
My highlight was the afternoons on the journey, when we hung around and played cards.
I felt sad when I got home because I won't get these experiences again.
The best thing was going orienteering and being left alone to find the markers.
At the end of camp, I felt like it was a good learning opportunity. I was glad I went because I learned heaps of new things.
The best thing about camp was becoming closer with people.
The best things about camp were the waterfall, camping and watching the stars, the high ropes course.
After the camp I felt sad that we were leaving; I enjoyed it more than I expected to.
Before camp I felt excited, nervous and intrigued.
The best thing about camp was talking to everyone.
