Reset Process - Supporting our students to stay in class & Ready to Learn

As Term 1 draws to a close, we’d like to take a moment to thank you for your continued support in helping every student stay engaged, supported, and ready to learn.

At Western Port Secondary College, we know students learn best when they are in class, participating in their learning, and working towards success. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to remain in their learning environment as much as possible.

To support this goal, we’ve implemented a clear and supportive process for students who need time to reset. When a student is withdrawn from class after an unsuccessful behaviour reteach, they are placed in our Reset Centre—a calm, structured space designed to help them reflect, reset, and return to class successfully.

In the Reset Centre, students:

  • Follow an entry routine to settle into the space.

  • Complete a Reteach Reflection Sheet to think about what happened and how to move forward.

  • Stay focused and complete their learning tasks to prepare for a successful return to class.

If a student is unable to engage with the Reset Centre process or follow reasonable instructions, this signals a need for further support. In these cases:

  • Parents/carers will be contacted to arrange early collection.

  • If collection isn’t possible, the student will be placed in a senior class for the remainder of the day and will receive a suspension for the following day.

We want to be clear - the Reset Centre is not a punishment. It is a proactive circuit breaker designed to keep students accountable for their actions while supporting their return to learning as quickly and successfully as possible. As we head into Term 2, we ask for your continued support in reinforcing the importance of being prepared to learn and making the most of every opportunity in the classroom.

Term 1 Proactive Wellbeing at Western Port: Wellio Launch & Parent Support

In Term 1, we were proud to launch Wellio across all year levels as part of our whole-school approach to supporting student wellbeing. At Western Port, we know that strong mental health is the foundation for success - both inside and outside the classroom. Wellio helps students build lifelong wellbeing habits using evidence-based strategies. Through engaging and age-appropriate lessons, our students are learning to:

  • Improve their sleep routines

  • Manage social media use

  • Build healthy relationships

  • Support their physical wellbeing

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

Over the course of this term, all students have engaged in weekly Wellio lessons as part of their iCARE classes. These sessions not only build key wellbeing skills, but also provide students with practical tools they can use in their everyday lives. Behind the scenes, the Wellio platform also helps us evaluate the impact of our pastoral care programs and ensure students are receiving meaningful support

Parent Webinars & Resources

Wellbeing isn’t just something we focus on at school—it works best when schools and families work together. That’s why we’ve also partnered with Wellio to deliver a termly parent webinar, giving families expert tips and strategies to support their children at home. In Week 8, we shared the link to the webinar: “Owning Your Role as a Parent: Knowing When to Step In and Step Back”This powerful session offered support around:

  • When to step in vs. when to step back

  • Leading by example

  • Advocating for your child and seeking support when needed

If you missed it and would like access to the recording, please contact Laura Higgins.

Looking ahead to Term 2

Next term, we’ll take a deep dive into one of the biggest wellbeing challenges for young people today: technology use and healthy device habits.

We will explore this issue through:

  • Targeted Wellio iCARE curriculum

  • An incursion from Arrive and Thrive

  • A parent webinar titled: “Managing Device Use: Creating Healthy Tech Habits at Home” Thursday 22 May, 6:30pm (AEST)Register here: Humanitix Link

The webinar will be recorded, so we encourage all families to register—even if you’re unable to attend live.

We are incredibly proud of the positive steps taken this term to embed proactive wellbeing support across our college. Thank you for your partnership in helping our students be safe and well.
