FOUNDATION NEWS
It has been another exciting week in Foundation, filled with curiosity, exploration, and learning about the world around us!
As inquirers, we have been learning about special places and what makes them meaningful to us. Together, we explored the difference between natural and man-made places, discovering that natural things can grow and change on their own, while man-made things are built or created by people. To put our learning into practice, we went on a Natural vs Man-Made Geography Hunt around our school. Armed with keen observation skills, we searched for three natural features and three man-made objects in our yard. It was wonderful to see how engaged and thoughtful everyone was, as we shared our findings and explained our reasoning. We will continue our inquiry by thinking about ways we can care for and protect our special places.
This term, we are very lucky to be engaging in Sustainability lessons with Mrs Gasbarro. During these sessions, we are learning all about sustainability and how we can care for and look after our school environment. To begin,we participated in a chalk talk to share our ideas about what sustainability means and what we think we might explore during our lessons. Our ideas were impressive-many of us mentioned gardening, planting, recycling, and helping nature to grow!
We are especially excited for this week’s sustainability session, which includes a Bee Incursion on Wednesday. As researchers, we will be learning about the important role bees play in our environment and how we can help to protect them. We will also be using bees wax to make our own candles. It’s sure to be a buzzing day of discovery and fun!
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Division- sharing equally
- Reading: Characters, settings, problems and solutions within Narrative Texts

YEAR 1/2 NEWS
Royal Botanic Gardens Excursion
The Year 1/2 students began the term with a wonderful excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens! As thinkers, students have been inquiring into the question, “How can we take care of our local environment?”
During the excursion, they explored the Kitchen Garden, which was designed by children 20 years ago, and discovered a range of ways we can care for our environment.
Students also visited the Children’s Garden, where they observed different flowers and fruit plants, and discussed what gardens need to thrive. They learned that gardens can be cared for by adding scarecrows to keep birds away, pipes to help water plants, and bug hotels to give bees and insects a place to rest.
One of the highlights was creating their own potted plant to take home and nurture. Students also explored the Fern Garden, Cacti Garden, and Guilfoyle’s Volcano, using their five senses to record what they could see, hear, smell, touch, and taste. It was a wonderful opportunity to deepen their appreciation for the natural world around them.
Congratulations to 1/2NA for leading Friday’s assembly! All students spoke confidently and read beautifully in front of the school community. Well done, 1/2NA!

YEAR 3/4 NEWS
As members of a Catholic community, we are learning about the importance of Mother Mary in the Catholic church. We created our own visualisations of Mother Mary based on our prior knowledge. We have looked at the Hail Mary prayer, and unpacked the phrases to gain a deeper understanding of why we pray to Mary.
As inquirers, we have been exploring our big question for this term “Design: How can we make a difference?’ We have been tuning into this topic by discussing the impacts that humans have had on different environments. Finding out more about sustainability, we have been introduced to different terms like ‘ecosystems’, ‘habitat loss’, ‘greenhouse gasses’, ‘fossil fuels’, ‘renewable resources’, ‘carbon footprint’, ‘pollution’ and ‘climate change’.
As writers, we have been exploring the world of poetry and have been focusing specifically on the poem “The Ant Explorer” by C.J. Dennis. Individually, we have innovated on this text by developing our own rhyming texts, written from an ants perspective. As a class, we’ve been able to identify and incorporate different literary devices like repetition, alliteration, figurative and descriptive language in our work.
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Addition and Subtraction (Year 3) & Fractions (Year 4)
- Literacy: Poetry
- Spelling: Contractions (eg. do not, don’t)
- Inquiry: Design and how we can make a difference in our world.
- Religion: The month of Mary (October)

YEAR 5/6 NEWS
Literacy
We continued with our book study of Nevermore. It is great to see students working independently or with teachers, and focusing on this task. They are recalling previous lessons, such as metaphors and similes embedded in the text as well. Just a reminder for students to read this at home!
Maths Games Day
The 5/6 Maths Games Day went very well! It was so amazing to see students working collaboratively with their competitive hats on to complete different problem solving tasks. The students did so well!
Inquiry
We have continued with our inquiry into different natural disasters. We have now looked in depth at bushfires and tsunamis and what to do as a preventative measure, and what to do if the disaster occurs.
Tomorrow - Tuesday the 21st, we have our year 6 excursion to Urbn Surf! Just a reminder students need hats, food, bathers, towel. If you have any other questions please contact your student's classroom teacher.
A reminder it is term 4, students need to be wearing hats!
