Celebrating Literacy and Creativity at Applecross SHS
Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee
Earlier this term, our Year 7 and 8 students had the exciting opportunity to participate in the online Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, competing against peers from across Western Australia. The competition challenged students with a range of complex and unfamiliar words, testing their spelling skills and resilience. We are proud to congratulate eight outstanding students who progressed to the state finals—a fantastic achievement that reflects their dedication and talent.
Book Week 2025 – “Book an Adventure”
Book Week 2025 was a vibrant celebration of reading and imagination. With this year’s theme, Book an Adventure, students and staff embraced the spirit of storytelling through creative costumes and lunchtime activities. The English Department hosted a variety of engaging events, including Harry Potter and Marvel Universe quizzes, book cover design challenges, and a bookshop naming competition. Daily prizes were awarded, and it was heartening to see enthusiastic participation from students across all year levels.
Year 9 – Innovative Narratives
Our Year 9 students have been exploring the world of multimodal and innovative narratives, engaging with both digital and print texts that use unexpected formats to captivate readers. As a culminating activity in Term Two, students wrote their own fables and transformed them into illustrated picture books. This creative project was both enjoyable and enriching, allowing students to express their ideas through storytelling and visual design.
