Home Economics

At the conclusion of Term 3, we farewelled our Year 12 Hospitality, Children, Family and the Community and Food Science and Technology students. The Certificate II Hospitality students in Year 12 were treated to a graduation breakfast at the Green Apple Café, prepared and served by the Year 11 Hospitality students. All Year 12 students studying Home Economics were treated to class parties, token gifts, café privileges and mystery box cooking. Year 12s, we wish all the best in your future endeavours and hope you have fond memories of your time in Home Economics.
In Year 11, Food Science and Technology students investigated food labelling and packaging laws, then designed a rice-based meal and packaged it, ensuring their food label and nutrition label met the Australian standard. They also had to evaluate their meal in terms of nutritional value and provide recommendations for improvement. Some examples of rice-based recipes the students chose were paella, risotto, curries, fried rice, burrito bowls, and sushi.
The Year 11 Certificate II in Hospitality had an incursion from the Chef Ambassador Program. A qualified chef visited the students to speak about her experience in the industry, highlighting both challenges and positive experiences. She demonstrated the art of making Yorkshire Puddings, which were filled with chorizo and chives. The Hospitality students were really engaged, asking many interesting questions, which facilitated discussion on careers in the hospitality industry, training, skills, and regulations.
The Year 10s in Fashion and Fabrics have had a very productive term, sewing heat packs based on their research into fabric and filling suitability, and ensuring they met the brief that their heat packs were made using Australian resources and embraced an Australian theme.
The Year 8 students in Fabulous Fabrics have completed their major project, a cushion cover they designed based on their research into the Noongar seasons.
