eyes on VET

Welcome to another edition of Eyes on VET, and what a bumper edition of achievements it is!
I hope all students had a wonderful break over the recent holiday period. Term 4 is always a very busy one with the finalisation of Year 12 results, Year 11s ensuring that all their work is completed on time to meet RTO deadlines and confirm their plans for next year with external courses and/or workplace, Year 10 Work Experience opportunities, and the Work Readiness Program with the new VET Connect student continues full steam ahead in preparation for 2026.
As part of our school’s Hospitality program last term, HGT’s Chef Ambassador Program visited our Year 11 Hospitality students. They enjoyed an inspiring visit from a guest chef who demonstrated how to make Yorkshire puddings and a delicious chorizo and chive appetiser. She shared valuable insights from her extensive experience in the hospitality industry and discussed the many exciting places her career has taken her. Students were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions about current challenges in the industry and picking up plenty of practical cookery tips and tricks along the way.
Since my last update, six of our students nominated for the SCSA VET Awards successfully advanced to the next stage of theprocess, which required an interview this past week with a panel of judges. Two students were nominated for an SCSA VET Award in two industry areas, and one was invited to attend an interview for both! The students provided feedback about their interviews, and all found it to be a very rewarding process. They really enjoyed sharing their VET journey, which made them realise just how much they have achieved in the VET program for their senior school studies. Following these interviews, students may be awarded Certificates of Excellence in VET, and if ranked first in the selection process for a VET Certificate of Excellence, they may be awarded a VET Exhibition Award in their industry area. A maximum of one Exhibition is awarded in each VET industry area.
Students awarded a VET Exhibition then proceed to the final stage of the VET Awards process, and could be awarded the Beazley Medal: VET, which is awarded to the eligible student who has demonstrated the most outstanding overall performance in a VET Certificate II or higher and in their other WACE achievements. Best wishes to all these very successful students! I look forward to seeing the final outcomes of these Awards in January.
Congratulations to Aubrey Doak-Devereux,
Nate Fogarty, Ella Nordon-Ramsay, Kai Sage, Lane Skipworth and Avni Thakur.
Spotlight on Resources to Support Children's Post-School Transition
School has been a significant part of your child’s life. They may have mixed emotions as they approach the end of it. They may be excited or unsure about their post-school plans, or they might feel a bit anxious or overwhelmed. As their parent, you can support your child through to their first big career transition, whether into study, work or play. Myfuture’s infographics, aligned with the DOTS Model of Career Development (Law & Watts, 1977), can help children learn more about themselves and their interests, explore opportunities, and make strong career decisions.
The focus for Term 4 is transition. Check out the infographic highlighting six ways to support your children when they finish school.

Snapshots around the workplace…
…to Aubrey Doak-Devereux, Nate Fogarty, Ella Nordon-Ramsay, Kai Sage, Lane Skipworth and Avni Thakur (Year 12 VET Connect), who reached the next stage of the SCSA VET Awards process.
…to Aubrey Doak-Devereux (Year 12 VET Connect) for being offered a full-time apprenticeship at ‘Your Carpenters Perth’, where he completed two days per week over the past two years for Workplace Learning. Aubrey had an impeccable attendance record and an outstanding work ethic, so it is no surprise that his employer wanted to have him on their team permanently.
…to Eden Chung (Year 11 VET Connect) on being elected as one of the members for the 2026 Student Council.
…Jack Martin (Year 11 VET Connect) on gaining a full-time apprenticeship at ASC (Australian Submarine Company), where there were close to 1600 applications for only four positions. There were several stages to the interview process, and Jack came out on top! What a success story!
...to the following Year 10 students who attended a 3-day Try-A-Trade in Bricklaying at SM TAFE, Thornlie Campus, from 24 to 26 September. The lecturer and Education Assistants who attended with the students said that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and “did Applecross SHS proud.”

Well done to all these students on their achievements!
