Réunion Island Exchange – A Journey of Friendship and Discovery 🌍
This term, four of our students had the incredible opportunity to take part in a cultural exchange program on Réunion Island, a small French territory in the Indian Ocean. The WA/La Réunion Student Exchange (inc), established in the early 1980s, is an annual reciprocal hosting programme for students of French in Western Australian schools and students of English in La Réunion. It involves a three-week stay in La Réunion, in June/ July, for Australian students. La Réunion students spend an equivalent amount of time in Australia in December/January with their correspondent. In both cases, students are billeted with a family. The exchange programme is organised by a voluntary committee of French teachers from both government and non-government schools. They select and match students with an appropriate French applicant, provide support to the host families during the stay here and deal with organisational matters relating to the exchange. The committee also selects the Western Australian students who go on exchange to La Réunion, as well as the teachers who accompany about 30 to 40 students each year.
Students participating in the exchange have the opportunity to:
- become more fluent in French;
- gain a better understanding of French culture and customs - and Réunion Island customs in particular;
- gain a broader perspective of their own beliefs, traditions and history;
- gain an understanding of the differences and similarities between the two countries;
- gain a deeper understanding of oneself and others;
- experience and accept another family and their way of life;
- share the richness of their family and cultural background with the host family; and
- create avenues for forming friendships
Over the course of their stay, the students immersed themselves in the island’s spectacular natural beauty… from pristine beaches and lush forests to dramatic waterfalls and even an active volcano. They also discovered Réunion’s unique cultural heritage, shaped by French, African, Indian, Chinese, and Malagasy influences. A highlight was celebrating Bastille Day (14th July) with their host families, joining in a night of food, music and fireworks that lit up the island. Beyond the sightseeing and celebrations, the most meaningful part of the exchange was the friendships formed. Each student was paired with a pen pal and welcomed into their homes like family. Together, they shared meals, swapped stories, and built bonds that will last a lifetime. Our students spoke warmly of the kindness, generosity, and humour of their hosts, and they are eagerly looking forward to welcoming their new friends to Perth this summer.
This exchange was not just a chance to travel but a true opportunity for personal growth, intercultural understanding, and global connection. We are so proud of our students for embracing this adventure with open hearts and minds.
Well done to the following students who came out of their comfort zone for this amazing experience: Adrisha Poudyal, Olivia Kuhn, Clara Siemon (Year 9) and Cesare Caiazzo (Year 10)
