📚LITERACY

📖UFLI:

Grade One Students

This week the students will be learning about the /oo/ vowel sound.

The graphemes (letters) students will be focusing on are 'oo' and 'u'.

This includes words such as : look, good, and bush.

Students will then be learning about the long /u/ vowel sound.

The graphemes (letters) students will be focussing on are 'oo'.

This includes words such as: food, too, and oops.

Grade Two Students

This week the students will be learning about the graphemes (letters) spelling 'ear' spelling /ear/.

This includes the words such as: near, hear and clear.

Students will then learn about alternate /a/ long vowel sounds.

The graphemes (letters) students will be focussing on are 'ei', 'eigh', 'ey', 'ea', and 'aigh'.

This includes the words such as: veil, they, weight, sleigh, straight, and great.

📔Mentor Text:

This weeks mentor text is 'Hey Little Ant' by Phillip and Hannah Hoose.

This picture storybook encourages students to think about different points of view and how words can be used to persuade others. It invites readers to see a situation from both perspectives and ends with a powerful question: "what would you do?"

Students will make predictions about the text and explore the different points of view in the story. They will learn to identify facts and opinions, and understand how these can be used to persuade someone. Through reading, writing and oral activities, students will practise sharing their own opinions and reasons clearly.

What can you do at home?

Nessy is a great literacy resource to use that supplements your child's reading in a fun engaging way on their iPad
Have your child ask you questions about the books that they are reading.
Before reading a book, have your child make predictions about the story line

🧮 Maths:

Grade One Students:

This week, Grade One students will be learning about sharing and fractions. They will explore the concepts of symmetry, halves, and quarters, and will be introduced to how to write fractions.

What can you do at home?

Cut fruit, sandwiches, or pizzas into halves and quarters. Talk about how each piece is an equal part of the whole.
Look around the house for things that can be divided equally (e.g., half a biscuit, a quarter of an apple, half a piece of toast).
Share toys (blocks, cars, or LEGO) equally between two or four people

Grade Two Students:

This week, Grade Two students will continue to explore location before being introduced to fractions. They will give and follow instructions to make quarter and half turns.

What can you do at home?

Give directions to move to places around your home, or to find an object in your home.
Practice your child's left and right!
Look for shapes or objects around your home that can be divided into halves or quarters.

To follow our Big Idea Discovery, we will be focussing on the world of 'Minibeasts'!

Students will be looking at the habitats of these creatures and how they survive.
