Mazenod Named Inaugural Catholic Associations Shield Volleyball Champions

Mazenod has been crowned the inaugural Catholic Associations Shield Volleyball Champions after representing the ACC in the 2025 CAS Championship.

The event brought together the top volleyball teams from three major Catholic sporting associations—ACC, SACCSS, and CGSAV—with Mazenod earning the right to compete after an outstanding season. Our team displayed exceptional skill, composure and teamwork throughout the tournament, ultimately securing the title and marking a proud moment in Mazenod’s sporting history.

Public Speaking and Debating Champions Crowned

Mazenod students have once again proven their strength in communication and critical thinking, taking out two major titles in this year’s ACC competitions.

Our Intermediate Public Speaking team was named ACC Champions, impressing judges with their clarity, conviction and poise across a range of topics. Adding to the success, our Intermediate Division 1 Debating team also secured first place, demonstrating sharp reasoning, teamwork and the ability to think on their feet under pressure.

Decoding the Universe: National Science Week at Mazenod

National Science Week sparked curiosity and creativity across the College, as students engaged in a range of hands-on experiments and challenges inspired by this year’s theme: Decoding the Universe.

Each day, the GS3 Lab was transformed into a hub of scientific exploration, inviting students to decode DNA, investigate crater formation, and put their problem-solving skills to the test in a space-themed escape room. One highlight of the week was the Laser Interference experiment, where students explored the behaviour of light by observing interference patterns created by human hair. The final challenge, Messages from Outer Space, saw students deciphering coded transmissions to communicate with extra-terrestrials, bringing the week to a close with a mix of mystery, logic and discovery.

A big thank you to our Science Faculty for bringing this year’s theme to life in such an engaging and memorable way.

Languages Week: Celebrating Connection Through Culture

Last week, Mazenod celebrated Languages Week with a vibrant series of activities that highlighted the diversity of languages and cultures studied at the College.

Students folded paper cranes in a Japanese senbazuru session, took part in a dynamic Chinese dragon performance, and sampled Italian cheeses - using the language to request each one correctly.

From cultural traditions to interactive experiences, the week was a powerful reminder of how language connects us to people, places and stories across the world.

Monash Youth Music Festival

On Saturday 9th August, Mazenod College’s Chamber Strings (30 students), led by Ms Eugenie Lyons, competed in the Monash Youth Music Festival and won their section: Senior Large Instrumental Ensemble.

Year 9 Robotics

Bumps, shoves and plenty of strategy—our Year 9 Robotics students went head-to-head this morning in Robot Wars. Working in teams with LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 kits, they designed and built robots with one mission: push the opponent out of the ring. Engineering, coding and teamwork all in action!

Mazenod Literature Festival Celebrates the Power of Story

Held alongside Children’s Book Week, the Mazenod Literature Festival has once again brought the written word to life, offering students a chance to engage with storytelling beyond the classroom.

So far, students have enjoyed visits from two acclaimed authors—Tristan Bancks, whose fast-paced novels captivated Year 7 audiences, and Emily Gale, who shared her journey as a writer and the impact of literature on young minds.

Each visit has encouraged students to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and see writing as a tool for creativity, reflection and change.

With one more author visit still to come, the Festival continues to celebrate stories that inspire, challenge and connect. Thank you to our Library team for coordinating another outstanding literary event.
