Explore the Learning in Grade 1
In English, the students have begun a new knowledge rich unit, 'First Nations Australians.'
As part of this unit, the students have been learning about music and traditional instruments, stories and songlines, First Nations celebrations, flags, art and traditions.
In Writing, students have been scaffolded to draft an Information Report based on this unit.
In the final two weeks of school, the students will explore the knowledge rich unit, 'Christmas Around the World.' As part of this unit, the students will learn about classic Christmas stories, such as The Twelve Days of Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and The Night Before Christmas. They will also explore texts that connect to knowledge rich units from throughout the year, such as 'Joy to the World,' which looks at Christmas celebrations around the world, 'The Christmas Blessing,' which explores the role that farm animals played in the birth of baby Jesus, 'Santa Got Suck in a Gumtree,' which extends on students' understandings of Australian animals, and 'Why I Love Christmas,' which connects to personal family traditions.


Students have been learning about mass, the subtraction algorithm with regrouping, volume, number bonds and continuing to build fluency.


During Creative Connections, students have been making a 'magical item' that connects to the Fairy Tales knowledge rich unit. In the final two weeks of school, students will create their own '12 Days of Christmas' books, Christmas wreaths and reindeers.
