Explore the Learning in Prep
In English, this week the students have concluded their knowledge rich unit, 'Seasons,' where they have been learning about the different seasons and weather patterns in Australia. The students have learnt about connections between the seasons that First Nations Australians recognise, extreme weather events and how the seasons can affect farming and produce. This term, the students also learned about writing a narrative and this week completed their final draft of a story crafted from a picture prompt.
In the final two weeks of school, the students will explore the knowledge rich unit, 'Christmas Around the World.' As part of this unit, the students will learn about classic Christmas stories, such as The Twelve Days of Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and The Night Before Christmas. They will also explore texts that connect to knowledge rich units from throughout the year, such as 'Joy to the World,' which looks at Christmas celebrations around the world, 'The Christmas Blessing,' which explores the role that farm animals played in the birth of baby Jesus, 'Santa Got Suck in a Gumtree,' which extends on students' understandings of Australian animals, and 'Why I Love Christmas,' which connects to personal family traditions.
In the final week of school, all Prep students will have a 'Decodable Home Reading' booklet given to them, which is comprised of fluency passages from Term 4. Reading a passage each day will provide students with important retrieval practice over the Summer break so that they are well placed to continue with their reading when they begin Grade 1.

Students have been using number bonds with a missing part to find the whole, using both addition and subtraction strategies. Students are also continuing to learn about sharing groups equally with no remainders and reading and writing 'teen' numbers. Students are differentiating between 'teen' numbers, that have 'one ten,' and '-ty' numbers such as 20, 30, 40, which have 'zero ones.'

During Creative Connections we have been building on the students' knowledge of Seasons, creating a 'Seasons Wheel,' with a poster for each of the four seasons with pictures of their favourite parts of each season. In the final two weeks of school, students will create their own '12 Days of Christmas' books, Christmas wreaths and reindeers.
