The Most Important Thing…
Tanya Vaughan, Deputy Principal - Head of Primary
Teaching our students about Jesus is the greatest privilege and joy that we share as Christian Educators. Across the school, our mornings are filled with the sounds of worship songs, prayers, sharing, reflection and gratitude as students and teachers pause for a time of Devotion before beginning their day.
Recently, I have had the opportunity to see our Preps recite their memory verses (complete with actions), seen students sharing time up at the cross on the hill, and enjoyed the sounds of children singing praise as I have visited classrooms. These times are special moments of connection and community-building which we continue to treasure.
I have also sat in the Primary Staffroom with the teaching staff, listening to the buzz of conversation and passion as they shared ideas about how to teach our young learners to know about Jesus, to love His word and to learn to listen to His voice. The conversation was uplifting and encouraging, and my heart was filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the ways our teachers are helping your children to learn about the most important thing…
Devotions in the morning is where we start, but throughout our days, there are countless moments when we can help our students learn the most important thing. As conversations are had at the end of recess or lunch duty, teachers pause and consider how they can model and apply the truth of God’s word to navigating social challenges, differences of opinion or upset children.
As classes explore the wonder of God’s world through the learning and exploration during Inquiry, the hope, joy and awe of God is shared and becomes a natural part of the learning experience for all students. As students gather in the music room, a reminder to praise the Lord is shared as students reflect on the Psalms and sing songs of praise together. During PE, little learners are encouraged to consider the cross on their uniform, and how this is a reminder of God’s love for them and how “in him we live and move and have our being” Acts 17:28.
From the heart of one of our teachers to the students:
“The most important thing I can ever teach you is to love Jesus and have a relationship with him. I can teach you to read, write, count, add and subtract but the most important lesson I’ll ever teach you is to always follow Jesus. Promise me that you will always choose Jesus. I want to see you in heaven. I’ll get there first because I’m getting old (haha!), but I want to be able to greet you and give you a big cuddle when you arrive.”
To follow Jesus, this is the most important thing…
