Victoria School Championships: Netball
On Tuesday, 19th August, Girton Grammar proudly competed in a thrilling day of netball at the Victoria School Championships here in Bendigo at the Red Energy Arena. The school had five competitive teams entered, all which showcased high-level skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Despite the Senior girls' unwavering talent against tough competition, they unfortunately did not manage to secure a win across their five games. However, their effort and commitment remained, representing the school with pride as they fought harder and harder throughout the entirety of the matches. Behind the scenes of the Senior team’s preparation on the day was Mrs Bowles, whose coaching played an excellent role in guiding the girl’s netball. With encouragement, tactical game-day strategies, and a calm yet strong persona, Mrs Bowles aided the team to stay motivated and cohesive throughout the tournament. This support was cherished by the players, who continued to give it their all until the final whistle. Thank you so much, Mrs Bowles!
The Intermediate team had an outstanding day on the court, finishing in second place ever so closely! Through their strong ability to win 4 out of 5 games, and a real one-of-a-kind game against St Mary’s College Seymour, they have earned themselves a well-deserved spot in the State finals that will be played early this September. Mrs Fisher’s guidance and encouragement were instrumental in keeping the team focused and united, and her support on the sidelines was greatly valued. While the girls extend their exciting journey with preparation and determination, we wish this team the very best of luck - Girton is right behind you!
Girton entered two teams across two pools within the Junior division. The Maroon team in Pool 1, and the Gold team in Pool 2. So much talent!
The Maroon team, coached by Ms Alexander, demonstrated almighty strength, winning 5 out of their 7 games. Through the combination of teamwork, court awareness, and of course enthusiasm, the girls were a standout on this tiresome day.
The Gold team, coached by Ms Simpson, secured 3 wins from 6 games. The team showed great potential, learning and improving with every match. Their determination and spirit were evident on court, and when they were not playing, they were proudly supporting the other Girton teams.
Both junior teams should be incredibly proud of their efforts, as well as Ms Alexander and Ms Simpson helping the new Year 7s in their first tournament with hopefully many to come!
Girton was also proudly represented by a team of Junior School girls from Years 5 and 6, who competed with great heart throughout the day in a new environment. Coached by Mrs Gibson, the team managed to secure 2 wins from their 5 matches. A terrific effort to the beginning of their Girton netball experience. The talent is a real standout!
It was a day filled with fast-paced action, enthusiastic support, and plenty of memorable moments. A huge well done to all the players, coaches, and supporters who made the competition a success and friendly experience. Girton looks forward to building on this experience and returning even stronger next year. Good luck Intermediate girls!
