Grade 3 Excursion to Botanic Gardens

Our Grade 3 students had an absolutely magical day at the Connecting to Country excursion at the Royal Botanic Gardens, where the sun shone as they explored the Gardens’ rich cultural and ecological heritage.

Through immersive experiences guided by expert educators, the children deepened their understanding of First Nations land care practices and the vital role native plants play in their lives, including for food, medicine, tools, fibre, and shelter.

They had a go at traditional crafts; practising string‑making and experimenting with tools just as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have for generations. The students were incredibly resourceful and enthusiastic and now feel confident in making their own rope using natural materials, a handy skill they can share with their families at home. It was inspiring to see them draw on their curiosity and creativity in every activity. Overall, it was a fun‑filled, educational adventure.

The Gardens came alive under clear skies, and the children returned buzzing with excitement, not just about the beautiful native plants and landscapes they toured, but also about their expanded knowledge of connection to Country, sustainability, and community.
