5 Ways to Wellbeing: Giving to Others

This week we continue to focus on the evidence based 5 Ways to Wellbeing.  Our focus this week is on "Giving to others' and our Big Question for our students is "How can I give to others?"  When you hear this week's Big Question, you might be thinking "Why should my child give to others?"  Did you know that when we give to others, it activates the areas of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust. Altruistic behaviour releases endorphins in the brain and boosts happiness for us as well as the people we help, and that is why we focus on giving to ourselves by giving to others.

Scientific studies show that helping others boosts happiness. It increases life satisfaction, provides a sense of meaning, increases feelings of competence, improves our mood and reduced stress. It can help to take our minds off our own troubles too!

You may like to speak with your child about how you feel when you give to others, and how caring for others can help us care for ourselves too.
