From Simone McGenniskin, Senior School Auslan teacher
This fortnight at Errol St, students built upon their learning from last week’s breakfast signs, and incorporated the new mealtimes signs into our ongoing ‘Waiter’ game. Instead of just ordering eggs, bacon and orange juice, students were asked to also order their own cutlery and crockery. Students learnt the signs for bowl, plate, knife, fork and spoon, as well as the mealtime descriptors breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and dessert.

This fortnight we had some lovely Hawaiian tunes to transport us to our themed restaurant (as we do each fortnight, previously it was French). The mealtimes signs were embedded into customers’ orders, for example if students wanted to order ice-cream they needed to sign ‘dessert’ to the waiter, or to order popcorn they needed to sign ‘snack’ etc (Image below).

Errol St students are frequently excited to come to Auslan and play our voice-off waiter game, with their creativity blossoming in their 3D crafts!
How can I help?
Print and practice: Put up our mealtimes signs on the fridge to help jog your child’s memory. They’ll love teaching you the signs and you can use them in your everyday conversations.
