Year 6 News

From Ava McLaughlin, Year 6 teacher
Preparation is the Key
This term, Year 6 students have made a wonderful start to their learning! They are not only working hard to achieve their academic outcomes across Literacy and Maths, but are also preparing themselves for the transition to high school by developing effective study habits and practising different note-taking strategies. It has been wonderful to see them take greater responsibility for their learning, ask thoughtful questions, and challenge themselves to improve.

In Pathways this term, we have started our cycle with diagnostics to find our level in Maths that we are ready to learn. After completing the diagnostics that are needed, we start our modules. Diagnostics are a test to see our level. Modules are activities that we are required to do. Every two weeks, we have a test to see what we have learned. After each test, a cycle is complete and we can see our own growth, our accuracy and modules mastered. Every class can see their class achievements.

Last week in Maths we focused on negative and positive numbers. We did temperature on number lines to practice this topic. Also we practiced adding and subtracting whale numbers with decimals. We found this easier when we used context for understanding the topic.

In 2026, Reading. We are learning about Civics and Citizenship, what roles do each government have and what power they hold. We learnt about the differences between the House of Representatives and the Senate. Civics and Citizenship is an important topic and I personally can’t wait to learn more.
