Year 4 News

From Lina McAliden Year 4 teacher
Phew… it’s getting hot with all these Sizzling Starts!
After the excitement and buzz of camp, our Grade 4 students have settled beautifully back into the rhythm of learning and are embracing the term ahead.
Writing
Students have begun crafting their narratives using inspirational “writing seeds” to spark imagination and creativity. They have been experimenting with engaging sizzling starts to hook their readers and the results have been fantastic! From mysterious openings to action-packed beginnings, it has been wonderful to see students taking creative risks and growing in confidence as storytellers.
Wellbeing
Students have been learning about the ‘Catastrophe Scale’, helping them understand the difference between big problems that require adult support and smaller “glitches” they can solve independently. For example, not being able to find a pencil might feel frustrating, but instead of calling out to the whole class, students are learning to calmly problem-solve by asking a peer for help.
You might like to try this at home! Have a conversation about where these situations would sit on the Catastrophe Scale and how we would solve them:
- I have lost my library book
- I don’t have my hat for outside play
- My lunch fell on the floor
- Someone is making fun of the way I learn
- There is a fire in the classroom
Our Grade 4 students also participated in their first assembly for the year. Congratulations to our confident presenters who proudly shared our learning with the school community, and well done to our fantastic R.I.S.E. Award recipients.
