Camp Rumbug - Foster
Last week Year 10 students travelled to Camp Rumbug in South Gippsland. The camp stretches across 200 acres of stunning temperate rainforest.
Students hiked, carrying their own equipment and set up camp for one night, sat around the campfire, making damper and telling stories. The other night students slept in the lodge. Students participated in activities including a giant swing, canoeing, flying fox, Jacob’s ladder and teamwork challenges. A fun time was had by everyone.

Year 12 Psychology students are investigating Classical Conditioning. Classical conditioning is a type of involuntary learning where we connect two stimuli together. For example, the lunchtime bell might make your belly grumble because you associate the lunch bell with food. The psychology class were investigating how close together in time the two stimuli need to be for learning to occur. Half of the guinea pigs were fed immediately after hearing the word “food”, and the other half heard the word “food” but there was a 5 second delay before their juicy carrot arrived. Unfortunately, the experiment was inconclusive – none of the guinea pigs displayed any signs of learning in our single session of class time. That isn’t entirely surprising as this type of learning usually takes ‘repeated associations’, and the learning strengthens over time.

On a rainy Tuesday morning (3rd March), 38 students from Bairnsdale Secondary College, Year 10 Personal Finance & Accounting and Travel & Tourism classes visited Lakes Entrance. Their mission was to explore the business and tourist features of Lakes Entrance, see what this major business and tourist centre provided, and maybe, what could further enhance its recognition as one of the region's major tourist centres.
First stop was the Tourist Information Centre where they discovered how the area was viewed by visitors when first entering. A centre filled with attraction brochures and local travel sites was very cosy. The students were able to inquire about the centre with the centre staff, who answered some questions. A good, overall, introduction to Lakes Entrance.
Next up was the Esplanade No 1 Resort and Spa. Students were warmly greeted by the resort’s manager, Jill. She gave an excellent introduction to the Resorts facilities and introduced students to other facility employers, Tom the barman from France and Gitar from Germany. They learnt about costs and structure of the various rooms as well as other aspects of running, maintaining and managing the business. The experience of creating non-alcoholic cocktails definitely put a smile on many faces. We got some high praise from Jill afterwards:
They are all really great kids and we would happily welcome another group.
Finally, students completed a mapping task, walking down the Esplanade itself, tallying the number of attractions of similar tourist features and learning about the type of businesses in Lakes Entrance. It was a valuable experience for the students, who will use this knowledge gained in the classroom, throughout their education and later in their lives after Bairnsdale Secondary College.
Overall, a very worthwhile experience.

VCE Outdoor Ed students journeyed to Walhalla for their major hike for the year. The walk from Walhalla to Coopers Creek was the warm up, but the steep hills of day two from the Thompson River Bridge had many students pushed beyond their comfort zone. Everyone got through the challenge and had time to experience the historic area of Walhalla, with dinner and a game of cricket at the iconic cricket ground, and then an epic game of hide and seek in the town. Day three was a walk up to nearby Mushroom Rocks, and anyone with any energy left scaled the giant landforms. Overall, the students and staff had an amazing time and learnt a lot about the landforms and history of the Walhalla and Coopers Creek areas.
