Grade 3 News!

The Grade 3 children have settled into the new school year, and their teachers could not be prouder. In such a short time, we have jumped straight into our learning while still making plenty of time for fun. Here is a snapshot of what we have been up to.

Writing

Students loved our Persuasive Writing unit. They explored structure and key features, and practised using persuasive devices to strengthen their arguments. They certainly know how to convince a reader. We have now moved on to Narrative Writing, and it has been wonderful to see their imaginations come to life. Students are creating captivating stories with clear orientations, problems, events and resolutions. We are encouraging everyone to use descriptive language and to “ban the boring” so their writing becomes even more exciting.

Reading

Our Reading Groups are up and running, and students are developing good reading habits. Children enjoy choosing “just right” books and taking part in guided reading rotations with teachers and peers. Along the way, they are building comprehension skills by identifying key ideas, making inferences, exploring vocabulary, and noticing how different texts are organised. They have enjoyed making predictions and are now focusing on making connections while reading, as well as continuing to apply their phonics knowledge to decode and understand more complex words across a range of texts.

Literature

We are having a fantastic time reading The Twits by Roald Dahl. There have been lots of laughs as we explore character traits and follow the many twists in the story. The outrageous and often disgusting habits of Mr and Mrs Twit have sparked lively discussions in class.

Maths

We began the term by revising place value, working with ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. From there, we moved into addition and subtraction. Students are now learning to use split strategies and number lines to solve problems with larger numbers. We are also building confidence with times tables through fun card and board games, as well as our new Times Tables Rock Stars online program.

Humanities

Our unit on communities, celebrations and commemorations has been both meaningful and enriching. Through interactive tasks, group discussions and research activities, students have developed a deeper understanding of what brings people together and why certain events are recognised and remembered.

URStrong

The URStrong program has been introduced with a focus on “Friendology.” These age appropriate lessons help students build healthy friendships, manage emotions, communicate clearly and resolve conflict. Our weekly sessions have already sparked great discussions, and it has been wonderful to hear students share their thoughts and reflect on their own experiences.

Well done to all our Grade 3 children for such an enthusiastic start to the year. We are looking forward to all that is still to come!
