Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Over the past week, it was great to see so many boys out trialling for our Term 3 team sports of Tennis, Basketball and Rugby League. All information pertaining to these Term 3 sports can be found on the College App. The nature of these sports in the AIC competition is that there are going to be disappointed boys, who miss out. This is unavoidable as the competition dictates how many teams we can enter. At Marist, we are committed to providing sport to boys as we know the benefits of being active for boys’ general wellbeing, both physical and mental. We are working on providing internal basketball and touch competitions for boys who miss out on playing an AIC sport next term. Once the trials settle and teams are finalised, we will communicate through the newsletter and the College App details of how to register and participate in these competitions.

Interhouse Track and Field Carnival

Our Track and Field season commenced last Friday with the House Athletics Carnival which was a great day of house competition, games and competitive track and field. A renewed sense of house spirit and healthy rivalry in both the championship and novelty events meant a great day was enjoyed by all. A sincere thank you to Mr Richard Graham, Mr Matt Millward and Mr Corey Robinson for your management of this event. Countless hours of preparation and organisation behind the scenes went in to making this a success. Thank you also to Mr Rob Martin and many of the Marist Track and Field coaches for your professionalism and commitment to the events, and the Heads of House and pastoral team for your involvement on the day in supporting the boys, as well as all the staff for your enthusiasm and support, and the students who participated in competitive or house activities. It was a great day for all involved.

Term 2 Wrap-up

For the record we won five of the eight AIC titles on offer, with the primary and secondary cross country, the rugby aggregate shield and the football 1st XI premiership and football aggregate shield. Well done to all involved across the term.

My sincere thank you to all the staff and students who contributed to a very successful Term 2 in sport. This is by no means an exhaustive list.

  • Mr Richard Graham (Director of Rugby and 1st XV Head Coach) for your dedication, drive and leadership of the rugby program.
  • Mr Mitch Reid (Cross Country Coordinator and Head Coach) for your coaching, mentoring and leadership of the cross country program.
  • Mr Tim Humphry and Mr Aaron Manson (Chess Coordinators) for your leadership, guidance and support of the chess program.
  • Mr Blair Whitlock (1st XI Head Coach, 9A Coach and Year 9 Football Coordinator) for your significant time commitment, leadership of the 1st XI and dedication to the program.
  • The 155 staff, old coaches and external coaches who provided guidance, coaching, leadership and role modelling for our athletes across the four Term 2 programs. Without you, it would not be possible. Your leadership, guidance and support of the boys in your care is so important and plays such a key role in the development of our students as athletes and as men.
  • The grounds staff, led by Mr Callum Clark, for maintaining the best fields and grounds in Brisbane.
  • The services team, led by Mr Matthew Tarlinton, for supporting each week with set-up and event logistics over a very busy term.
  • The events and catering teams, led by Mrs Bethany Halpin and Mr Nathan Eyre, for putting on such wonderful events and supporting the sports program throughout the term in multiple ways.
  • The social media team, namely Mrs Bethany Halpin, Ms Antonia Svenson, Mr Damien Zoomers, Mr Denver Jensen and Gower Productions, for creating interest and publicity for the sports program. This is growing season on season and is a real highlight.
  • The College Leadership Team, for your continued support of the sports program, attendance at key events and matches and support of the boys week on week.
  • The P&F for oversight and management of the home canteens.
  • All the parents, guardians, grandparents and supporters who come along every week and cheer on the blue and gold. The atmosphere is building at our home days.
  • The Old Boys, especially the OBA, for your support through coaching, and general interest in the sports program.
  • The boarding staff who work so hard to make sure all the boys get to their games. We don’t make it easy for you with supplementary games at multiple venues across Brisbane every week.
  • The young men of Marist who pull on the blue and gold every week and represent your college with determination, pride and effort. Well done on a fine set of results this term. May you always get the results that your effort and application deserve.
  • Well done to the Year 12 who have run their last race, moved their last pawn, kicked a final ball on Cameron or run onto McMahon for the final time. Thank you for your years of service. You can look back on the memories and reminisce about your time in the blue and gold.

Inter-House Track and Field Carnival

Last Friday was the College’s annual Inter-House Track and Field Carnival. In what was a gorgeous Brisbane June day, this year's event was again a fantastic day and a resounding testament to the power of participation and enjoyment of our students.

Congratulations to Ignatius House for emerging as the winners of the 2024 Inter-House Track and Field Carnival. Their strong and consistent performances, led by their Open’s team and unwavering team spirit, helped them hold off second place Slattery. Congratulations to all the other Houses for their spirited participation and for contributing to the overall success of the carnival.

I would like to thank the students for embracing the carnival with such enthusiasm. Their commitment to giving their best, having fun and cheering for their fellow Housemates created a wonderful atmosphere.

At the heart of the carnival was the spirit of participation and enjoyment. The Championship and novelty events were designed to ensure that every student had the opportunity to get involved and contribute to their House's success. I commend all students for their positive mindset and willingness to step out of their comfort zones.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff members whose energy and support helped make this carnival an overwhelming success. Whether it was coordinating the activities, or providing guidance and encouragement to the students, our staff demonstrated their dedication to fostering a positive and engaging experience for all involved. I would like to thank them for their tireless efforts across the day.

Thanks to Mr Matt Millward and Mr Corey Robinson from our Sports Administration team for the hard work behind the scenes to make the carnival a success. Their work leading into the event and on the day is a huge contributor to the success of the Inter House Carnival. Thanks also to Ms Margaret Canning for her support as the scorer for the event. With so many results coming in quickly across the day, she does an incredible job. Thanks to the senior students who supported the staff across the day in various roles. Your contribution to the carnival is greatly appreciated and is a strong reflection of the culture we have here at the College.
